If you WFH in winter, would you rather?

  1. Go into the office (assuming there is an office space available) and use their light and heat to keep warm.

Or

  1. Still work at home despite the added heating costs or faff to try to stay warm without using heating?

I feel like it would just be easier (cost and warmth wise) to go into the office, but at the same time I love home working and not sure I can be arsed to get myself into the office.

You?

@WinterMusings Thank you, some helpful suggestions on here, I’ll take these on board. I have to go out to do school run anyway, so once car is warm it’s not much further for me to carry on to work, so I’m thinking if it’s really cold it’ll be cheaper to do this and be warm all day. I’ll see how much the bills v fuel go up in October.

@thechiefstew if you're already out & the car is warmed up. It's not so bad as waiting around in the rain for busses or walking 2 miles etc.

whatever makes YOU happiest is the only thing that matters, I just think if you want to stay at home it doesn't need to be expensive to do it 😊

today it's hard to imagine being cold though isn't it!!🥵

A heated throw is the answer. Cheap to run and toasty warm. No need to go back to the office.

I agree heated throw is amazing. It is very comforting aswell - like a hug!

I will go into the office a few days a week. Probably three to four days.

my commute is short and cheap - £3.50 per day on the bus. I also get more professionally out of being around people. I am hoping I won’t be the only person there😂

CrazyBaubles · 17/07/2022 19:12

Im hoping I'll have the choice by the time winter comes around and if so I'll definitely choose to WFH the majority of time. My reasons are:

  1. My commute costs less than heating my house (plus I tend to wear layers and use a blanket rather than endlessly heating the house anyway).
  2. I enjoy the extra time not commuting gives me and in the winter this should mean I actually see some daylight
  3. I will be able to enjoy the effort I make to decorate my house for Christmas!
alphapie · 17/07/2022 19:22

@WinterMusings well yes I read and can't see anyone voting for 1, hence why I said I don't know why anyone would.

I added a correction to my post a second later, if that's where your comment was coming from.

I'd never choose to work in an office again either, and don't. I go in a few times a year for award ceremonies and PDRs with the team.

whatfuckinghobbyisit · 17/07/2022 19:27

Office all the way. WFH is my idea of Hell.

BlooberryBiskits · 17/07/2022 19:32

Despite cost of heating, I prefer to WFH as I get more done when I can focus and I can use any snippets of free time for chores etc, & can sleep in & exercise instead if getting in car/train

I do find the isolation an issue but 1-2 days in a week hybrid is perfect for me : otherwise trying to have the odd lunch with local friends/neighbours

Re cold -leggings under things seems to help most. I think the lack of moving around is the big issue so try to remind myself to get up now & then!

SarahSissions · 17/07/2022 19:35

Work from home, £450 rail travel means I need to be going somewhere to burn more on electricity and gas at home

turquoisebuttons · 17/07/2022 19:43

A mix of both. It’s cheaper for me to WFH but (unlike most of mumsnet, it seems) I don’t enjoy it at all. I find it really lonely and isolating.

HerRoyalNotness · 17/07/2022 19:45

WFH. It is normally a 30 min drive to office but in work hour traffic is at least an hour, sometimes more. Complete waste of time.

Rwealere · 17/07/2022 19:49

Go into office , my area is more like an industrial area and gets worse in the summer with the neighbours noise in v close small gardens

Blanketpolicy · 17/07/2022 19:52

Our office is moving to a vibrant, elegant, fucking stupid, city centre location with no parking this winter. It is going to be an awful 90min walk/bus/walk in the dark, in wet west coast of Scotland weathers lugging laptop/paperwork/lunch in as we have no fixed desk/lockers/or onsite catering compared to our current 30 minute drive/park.

It is hybrid working so will be at home some days, but even for the day or two in the office a nightmare journey. Anyone I have spoken to are already considering looking for new "opportunities" elsewhere.

WFH is much preferable!

thankyouforthesun · 17/07/2022 20:20

Well my commute costs about £70 a day so I would rather WFH with the heating on.

NCHammer2022 · 17/07/2022 20:24

I’d go for the first option (and plan to - I have to go out to do the school run anyway so it’s not like wfh means a lie in). My commute is basically free though, £2.50 at most.

Darbs76 · 17/07/2022 20:29

Office definitely. We have to go in 40%, so 2 days a week, I do 3 days a week as I currently take a late lunch break and pick my daughter up from school as she’s having some health issues (secondary age so would have to get bus / walk otherwise). I enjoy going in, so I’ll continue to do 3 days in winter. It’s cold in this house so I’ll be glad for a bit of free warmth! Though everyone complained it was too cold in March, not they are complaining it’s too hot to come to work so I’ve reminded them that they think the office is so cold!

I’m so over home working. Winter 2020/21 was the worse winter ever, so isolating and lonely, I’m a social person and struggled not seeing actual adults much

LemonadeSunshine · 17/07/2022 20:35

WFH. In summer and how days, smart enough top half then shorts if needed, fan to myself and window open. In winter, heated throw and / or hot water bottle. If I need to hear other people an hour in Starbucks is sufficient human background noise for a good few weeks :-)

jay55 · 17/07/2022 20:38

My flat is hot in winter without heating so I like being home and not having to travel in the cold/wet.

Right now im booking a desk in the office as much as possible for the aircon.

jevoudrais · 17/07/2022 20:39

WfH, but mainly because I have dogs. If I didn't have dogs, I'd choose the office.

Pineappleelephant · 28/05/2023 09:44

Would prefer inside with aircon on. Sun can be exhausting. My neighbours have a loud voices even with them inside. Just shut the window. I want to enjoy my garden on the one rare day that I have off from work. Thats the polite version of what I'd like to say to them.
