To ask what to get someone whose leaving the country?

I need to get a leaving present for someone whose leaving to go to the far east for work. It’s difficult as obviously I don’t want to get something that will be a burden to pack but also want to get something more personal than cash. Has anyone done this and what would you have wanted?
Thanks

Teabags

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 17/07/2022 06:40

I lived in China for a while.
Marmite and Heinz beans!

A plea: get it early enough for them.
The gifts we got the day DS left school were lovely, but the packers had already been, and the suitcases were full to bursting.

Something local to your area?

UseOfWeapons · 17/07/2022 06:54

Definitely teabags. I lived in Italy for a few years, and the tea was awful. They are light, and easy to pack.

Take them out and spend time with them… that meant the most to me when I moved overseas for work

As someone who regularly leaves the country for years at a time list would be:
Marmite
Salt n vinegar crisps
Brand of make up/skin care I can't get overseas
Cooking sauces (packets), herbs and spice mixes
Magazines
Chocolate/ Brands of sweets
You haven't said if male/female but voucher for M&S or similar (can be difficult to get larger / UK average) sizes...especially underwear in some places
Subscription to a good VPN
Nice candle / reed diffuser
Twiglets

I bought my friend who was emigrating a lovely pair of earrings. Knew she had no room to extra" things" , so these could even fit in a purse.

Teabags

😁Good idea! She does love tea!

Instead of a physical gift, make up your own voucher with a tick-list of stuff like teabags, marmite etc. Tell her when she's settled and ready, she can 'redeem' the voucher and you'll see her the things she's asked for. Always nice to get a care package when you're away long term!

I like this idea as if they love all these treats that have been mentioned, they might have packed them already

A better gift would be to get them it in 6 months time when they have run out and can’t get hold of any Percy Pigs (add other items here)

I'd get her a ticket for an event/ attraction/restaurant in her new town.

Our teacher went to teach in Hong Kong. We clubbed together and bought him a voucher for afternoon tea at The Peninsula. I spoke with the staff at the hotel and they posted it over to the UK so we could give it to him in person 👍.
