To consider getting a nanny for my teen?

My DS loves Spanish and is keen to develop this on his own. He's downloaded language apps and likes to practice by himself. He has friends who speak Italian, Dutch, twi, mandarin etc but not Spanish! And he does sit down tutoring for other subjects already.

Would it be reasonable to get him a Spanish speaking nanny/manny? For a couple hours a week, who could take him out, play footy or do an activity and just speak Spanish. So he can develop via Spanish immersion. Just mentioned my idea to a family member and they said a teen can't have a nanny!

I'd say it's not only weird it's not overly necessary.

Why not see if there is a more low key way of doing this, such as a foreign exchange, or summer camps in Spain over the Uk etc.

Saz12 · 16/07/2022 18:24

It’s only weird because you’re referring to “having a nanny”. If you reframe as “Informal one-to-one Spanish conversation sessions” then suddenly it sounds like a totally different thing.

WhackingPhoenix · 16/07/2022 18:26

I wouldn’t frame it as a ‘nanny’, perhaps more like a 1-1 Spanish tutor? Is he old enough to go on a summer camp type thing? Or does his school offer an exchange programme?

Alternatively, could you perhaps be a host family for a Spanish-speaking student?

Thefriendlymoth · 16/07/2022 18:29

Surely it would be more appropriate to see if you can find a local tutor/language learning group where he can possibly meet connections and speak it more that way. This doesn’t really sound like the role of a actual nanny.

Zetty · 16/07/2022 18:33

A local Spanish speaking tutor who does group lessons would be better, he can build up connections with the other learners to use outside of the paid class, in whatsapp groups, trips out etc vs a nanny, which he's too old for and who's only going to be talking to him in the paid hours.

purplecorkheart · 16/07/2022 18:36

You don't need a nanny. You need a lanaguge tutor. I am sure if you put up a notice on your local facebook page/ contact the International Students section of your local university you will find a tutor. Whether classes are in person or online

Murdoch1949 · 16/07/2022 19:25

Not a lot of talking goes on while playing football with a Manny! Just get a youngish Spanish tutor who your child can bond with, chat & learn..

PeekAtYou · 16/07/2022 19:59

Only the term nanny is weird. Just say someone to practice Spanish conversation with and it'll sound more acceptable.

WeAreBob · 16/07/2022 20:02

Cant you just get a Spanish tutor? Someone who will run lessons by immersion. My kids have one. When you enter the room, no English is spoken. Only Spannish. It's great.

Exactly.

Don’t be weird OP

A nanny?! Dios mio 🤦‍♀️

randomsabreuse · 16/07/2022 20:06

Au pair would be the obvious thing. I had an au pair in my early teens because my parents commuted and got home late plus some overnight stays for work - so there was an adult in the house overnight when necessary.

Not sure how much Brexit has killed the system but if you have a spare room (and ideally a language school in the area) it was effectively a paid language exchange if you get the au pair from the right country.

Mellowyellow222 · 16/07/2022 20:07

You want a Spanish speaking fool dude who you put to hang out with your teen for a couple of hours and speak Spanish.

that’s not a nanny it’s a tutor!

I was actually watching old modern family episodes and Gloria got manny a cool Spanish tutor!

do you know anyone at a local university - I am sure there are loads of Spanish speaking students who would live to spend a couple of hours a week chatting to your son.

But it’s not child care - you would need to be nearby

Mellowyellow222 · 16/07/2022 20:07

Cool dude not fool dude

HaggisBurger · 16/07/2022 20:09

It’s not a nanny if s/he’s there 2 hrs a week! What an odd way to put it.

CrossroadsWasGood · 16/07/2022 20:11

Why would a nanny or a manny want to work for you for two hours a week?

I think you're pushing too hard.

Yes he is doing an exchange but was thinking of something more on going. Will look into summer camps

Agree its not necessary, just something to build on his interest. It's one of the few things he's driven about so I want to support him with it!
