To feel down about food this weekend

Megapops · 16/07/2022 15:49

The heatwave seems to have brought with it tons of sugary/fatty food adverts everywhere, and everyone talking about BBQs and all the delicious food and booze they're going to be having this weekend. I feel really overwhelmed and bombarded by it (I don't even have social media or anything.)

I'm not overweight (BMI 21) but have a high risk of getting diabetes (rife in my family) so I eat very plain foods, no sugar, no booze. I also put on weight incredibly easily. It's a real burden for me as I love food.

Just been to the supermarket and everyone is piling up their trollies with ice cream, cream cakes, crisps, sweets, fizzy drinks. How comes everyone else can stuff their faces with sugar and fat with no consequences? Makes me sad.

Sorry to be critical but orange juice (and frozen orange juice, which is a Del Monte lolly) is full of sugar... This is why we have a diabetes/obesity problem. People don't seem to understand the basics of nutrition and food labels. It's not fair though, they're quite misleading.

I didn’t say they had no sugar. I said they had no added sugar, which is true - they are 100% juice. One of those on a hot day is really not going to give you diabetes or make you obese and if you think it will then I think you might need to consider talking to someone about your anxiety and restrictive food behaviours.

Bubblebubblebah · 16/07/2022 22:46

People understand difference between sugar and refined sugar tho. They are differently absorbed and have different impact.
As long as they don't eat 5 of these lollies in one sitting. Meh. It's like telling people orange itself is bad

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 16/07/2022 22:57

I just don't eat anything, then it can't be wrong.
I recommend it.

No, I'm not overweight now, but that's the point. I have to work so hard to maintain my weight with diet and exercise every day. Both my parents are in their 60s, obese, do no phsyical activity, and have serious health issues along with their diabetes. They won't change. My mum's parents were the same. I'm not ending up like that.

Their lack of physical activity is much more of an issue than them enjoying a chicken drummer on a bbq occasionally

WillMcAvoy · 17/07/2022 01:14

Don't be daft.

Scottishskifun · 17/07/2022 01:17

You certainly don't need to eat a plain diet and there are loads of foods diabetics can eat if you know what your doing around GI levels and also pairing with high natural fats food to slow down carb/sugar release. As well as doing simple things to reduce carb/sugar levels like freezing then reheating cooked pasta or rice.

My favourite thing when I had GD was a homemade diabetic friendly salted caramel chocolate brownie!

Scottishskifun · 17/07/2022 01:20

Oh and you can have ice cream such as Oppo (they also do ice cream lollies) just pair with a handful of nuts it's low cal ice cream anyway and carb/sugar level is OK too.

Sloebluewalls · 17/07/2022 02:07

half the adult population is overweight.

I thought you were moaning that everyone else can ‘stuff their faces with sugar and fat with no consequences.’ Now apparently they don’t understand nutrition and are all obese?

Maybe just worry less about what everyone else is eating - I find it enough hassle considering what we are having for tea never mind examining how many ice lollies the man in front of me has in his trolley.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 17/07/2022 03:15

Love... sorry but you DONT sound well to me. I occasionally eat pizza, sweets, patties etc. I'm an 8-10. It's about knowing moderation not cutting everything out

TheWayoftheLeaf · 17/07/2022 03:22

Also have you ever imagined that other people need more calories than you?

DP is 6ft and has a health condition. If I don't feed him 3000+ cal a day he drops down to 9st. For some people fat and carbs are needed. If I gave him low cal food he would starve to death.... low cal doesn't mean healthy.

DuarPorte · 17/07/2022 09:09

This OP either -

  1. Is Goady
  2. Has significant food issues
Allthecoloursoftherainbow · 17/07/2022 09:58

YABU for peering into other people's trollies and making assumptions about what they're buying. Must say I find that very odd...

OP isnt even diabetic!!

I suspect serious food issues and would think a referral to a dietician might be in order, to show her there's nothing wrong with a normal balanced diet.

Also lots of posters obsessed with weight dont realise you can have hidden obesity where although a "healthy" weight they have a lot of visceral fat and very little muscle. Some people are obsessed by losing weight but dont realise that you can lose inches without losing any weight at all by toning muscle , which is why they think excercise doesnt work, when it really does!
I use a boditrax machine and egym. I am heavy but i have a lot of muscle . My muscle score is 22 out of 24, average is 12. My metabolic age is 49, i am 59 and my phisique is now bordering on standard muscle. My score for visceral fat is 9 in the healthy range of 1 to 12. According to egym my legs have the age of 37 and my arms around 50. This score is without going for a couple of years.
My downfall has been not being able to swim and aqua during covid and when pool closed for 6 months due to maintenance.

I totally get this. As a coeliac who is intolerant to meat, fish, dairy, most fruit, some veg, sugar, caffeine and alcohol I get really fed up on occasion. It would be lovely to just eat normal stuff sometimes!

Icanstillrecallourlastsummer · 18/07/2022 14:34

Of course it has an impact on them. Maybe it's a one off. Maybe they exercise loads. Maybe they are themselves unhealthy and overweight.

That sounds really miserable and understand why you would feel like that.
.. But the OP doesn't have any condition or intolerance restricting them, they are choosing to eat that way

Scottishskifun · 18/07/2022 16:18

@LegoVsFoot I know it was the assumption by OP that all diabetic food is plain I was on about.

Type 2 diabetes does run in my family (hence I was more likely to get GD which I did) so I often follow a low GI/lower sugar diet naturally as its what I am used to. But I still have the occasional take away, fish and chip and ice cream!
Agree the OP seems to have a issue with food.

Butterfly44 · 18/07/2022 16:55

Why are you worrying about what others are buying and putting in their trolleys? Focus on what you want yourself
