Withdraw from interview or go?

HuffleWoof · 16/07/2022 15:37

I will preface this with I am on anti psychotic medication to help stabilise my bipolar disorder and that puts me at risk of heat vulnerability because your temperature can rise very quickly.

I have an interview on Monday and where it is, is slap bang in the middle of the red heat warning at 12pm. I've asked if it can be done via zoom but they've said they've not had any advice to say that they should change their plans to interview face to face so have declined my request.

Would you pull out and chalk it up to experience or go and risk it? I would like the job but I also like my current job.

It feels like this is setting a precedent, come out I. A red warning for heat because we don't change what we do for anyone. For what it's worth that trust suspended surgery recently because of the heat.

It's a health care position if that makes a difference

Personally I wouldn’t have expect them to change the interview just because of the heat.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 16/07/2022 15:44

It depends how desperate you want the job . I have therapy on tuesday at 12pm they havent cancelled it , will be for one hour and it's a 3 strikes and you're out situation and I'm on number 2 so to keep my husband happy I'm going . It's for one hour , I'm assuming your interview wont be much longer , your place might even have air con , my place dont .I really cant get worked up too much about the hysteria everyone is having about the weather , it's one hour at most not the whole day, you're very unlikely to die or get into serious difficulties for the sake of an hour.

girlmom21 · 16/07/2022 15:45

I wouldn't go as I wouldn't want a job working for an employer who can't accommodate for your health issues.

agree, however not sure that the OP has mentioned her being on medication?

But think the extreme weather isn't exactly a state secret, so they should use common sense, and to carry on as usual is a bit Hmm

HuffleWoof · 16/07/2022 15:51

@ilovemydogandmrobama2 I literally have it in the first line of my op I'm on antipsychotics that make it difficult to control your temperature. My psychiatrist has said anyone on my medication needs to stay in on Monday and Tuesday because of the risk. The risk of hyperthermia is huge. I know it's 'just hot' for some people but if my car broke down on the motorway in this heat on the way there or back I'd probably die.

I think that poster meant she wasn't sure whether you'd mentioned the medication to the employer as to why the interview was so high risk for you

nocoolnamesleft · 16/07/2022 15:53

No, she means we don't know if you mentioned it to your potential employer.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 16/07/2022 15:55

Then dont go ! They've already said they wont change the interview time so I dont know what else you expect or what other choices you have

HangOnToYourself · 16/07/2022 15:55

Have you explained that this could cause complications for you due to.your meds? If you have and they wont accommodate then I wouldnt want to work there

Yes, I agree with you!

Sorry if I didn't make my point well, but all I was suggesting is that the company who are doing the interview aren't aware of the medication you are on, and may if they knew would have agreed to the interview on Zoom.

But the extreme weather is known about and Shock that they would want anyone travelling to a face to face interview when it could be re scheduled or done remotely.

Ilikewinter · 16/07/2022 15:57

Well if its a real life or death situation as youve described then common sense tells you not to go surely?

HuffleWoof · 16/07/2022 15:58

@HaveANiceFuckingDay oh sorry! I read it wrong!

yes I've been honest and told them why. I've been totally transparent about the reason why and I put it on the application form.

I think im going to have to withdraw

OP posts:
49er · 16/07/2022 16:00

Are the company aware you have a long term health condition and are on medication? In this one-off scenario interviewing you over Zoom would be a reasonable adjustment as per equality legislation.
You need to quote this to them @HuffleWoof

olympicsrock · 16/07/2022 16:03

You would be very reasonable to quote that you are being discriminated against due to a disability.

HuffleWoof · 16/07/2022 16:06

@49er thank you. I'll go back to them and ask. It's the nhs and they are aware of my medical issues because I was open on the application form.

OP posts:
Whataretheodds · 16/07/2022 16:08

So you have requested a reasonable adjustment due to a medical condition and they have declined? Interesting

DisplayPurposesOnly · 16/07/2022 16:12

Isn't bipolar considered a disability?

Don't withdraw, put the onus on them. Remind them on your medication, its effects and the advice of your psychiatrist. Ask for a reasonable adjustment, either a virtual interview or rearranged time.

If they chose not to proceed, that's on them.

49er · 16/07/2022 16:12

Yes definitely go back to them (by email if possible so you have in writing) @HuffleWoof
Say what you've said here in your opening post and quote your Psychiatrists advice.
State clearly the "reasonable adjustment" you require ie. Interview over zoom or change the day,

Good luck at your interviewFlowers

nocoolnamesleft · 16/07/2022 16:25

Agree I'd be wondering about reasonable adjustments .

custardbear · 16/07/2022 16:28

Ring Monday morning, tell them again. It's against medical advice so can you rearrange, have a Zoom interview or if none is ok then you can pull out. Speak to HR as they'll be more clues up on policies of interviewing

Ishacoco · 16/07/2022 16:41

What medicine is it out of interest? I'm on a couple of anti-psychotics for the same diagnosis.

HuffleWoof · 16/07/2022 17:19

@Ishacoco I'm on quetiapine but it's all of them that affect the body's ability to stay cool

@Ishacoco there are lots of journals on it and you can find information on mind too.

I interviewed for health care assistant and patient pathway co ordinator only last summer in the nhs - both times were remote interviews. The hca one was bit of a time waste, the interviewers who attended were not from the ward I applied to even and it most regrettably turned out only bank work was available, despite all the hype at the time I don't think I would have been so happy if I'd gone to a face to face. Good grief, how annoying for you - wonder why they are being so difficult.

I would be inclined to apply again when the job inevitably pops up again. I think I applied to PPC on like it's 5th re advertisement!

I went for an face2face interview Friday in black suit and was risking it, I was interviewed at 11am and actually didn't get as hot as I thought, well not till I came out after interview - I am meant to be starting my new job on Monday!!
