Decided not to holiday abroad again this year and (sort of) regretting it?

Not been abroad since 2018 due to Covid and other things. Have had some very nice UK trips though. Decided we cba again this year with all the uncertainty, ever changing testing rules etc etc. Recently returned from a very nice week in a part of the UK I'd never been to. However, feeling a bit sad. Seems quite a few of our friends & family are going/have been abroad (some more than once!) and lots of amazing photos are popping up on facebook (I know, I know!). Can't help having a bit of fomo and wishing we'd been braver. On the other hand, seeing the chaos at airports and hearing of cancelled flights I'm not sure if I could take the stress! Don't know anyone personally who has experienced this though, not yet anyway! We've tentatively booked a European city break for the autumn, fingers crossed we can go.

I know I'm lucky to have a holiday at all and there are many people who can't afford to go anywhere due to all the economic strife. I guess this is just a self indulgent whinge really, and am expecting to be flamed!

Genuinely - why is abroad “better”? If you’ve been to a nice place and enjoyed yourself, why would it have been better if it had been in a different country? (Caveat - I am not a lover of hot weather and beaches. I know people who are like to go to holiday resorts which would be my idea of hell, so happy to accept that I’m in the minority!)

Well you are going abroad if you have booked for the autumn.
Just think you still have your holiday to look forward to and theirs are over.
Remember to take lots of photos and post on social media 😁

There’s another thread going at the moment which was started by someone who’s having a horrible time abroad 😂

YABU obviously. The UK weather is really good atm, and with covid, travel chaos and extreme temperatures in other parts I’m really glad we’ve stayed in the U.K. this summer. We’re going abroad later in the year but if it doesn’t happen for some reason then the country will still be there next year. It sounds like you’re more envious of the Insta shots!

We did go to Portugal recently having not been abroad since 2018. It was lovely and we had no major issues but I’m not convinced it was worth the stress tbh. Loads of friends had their entire holidays cancelled at the last minute and lots of people in Portugal had their return flights cancelled while they were there - this happened to us in 2018 and it was an expensive nightmare to get home.

Also with the exchange rate abroad is exceedingly expensive atm.

I won’t be going away again until the airports stress is fully calmed down.

We decided the same for this year, just looked like it would be more hassle than it was worth. We've got a few long weekends booked over the summer holidays and if the weather is good I'm sure it'll be fine but I know if we get crap weather I'll be regretting it!

I'm so glad we decided not to go abroad this summer ( although to be fair we were away to Tenerife in October and skiing in France in February).

Over the last few years British summer weather means there's a fair chance you have sunshine in the UK ( yes I know Global warming) so it seems silly to spend a fortune to be too hot abroad.

Add to that all the airport chaos and you should be thanking your lucky stars. Like you we are planning to go abroad later in the year and I'm hoping it's sorted by then.

Oh and we got covid on our UK break and it was pretty tough driving home yesterday, can't imagine trying to navigate through an airport and worrying about passing it on, or trying to reschedule and sort out travel insurance.

Actually I'm not really keen on sitting round the pool/beach day after day either, I like to sightsee too but, as I struggle with heat, that's not pleasant in most destinations this time of year, yet we were able to do that plenty in the UK (though maybe not this coming week!) I think it may be more that this year the DCs did A Levels/GCSEs and we'd always said we'd do something special, given that they'd be finished early and it didn't happen.
