Never ending period

I had covid March 2020 and subsequent long covid until January of this year. During this time, I barely had a *Normal period, they lasted only a day or two some months and were very light.
I got covid again at the end of May and have now had a period for 5 weeks. It will stop for a day or two and then start again, lots of the time I have clots.
Its worrying me. I’ve booked for an internal but that’s in 3 weeks.
Anyone else had this?

What did the doctor say?

Feelsyuk · 16/07/2022 08:54

@SavoirFlair Ive not had the appointment yet, I’ve booked to have one in a few weeks (not in U.K. so book private)

I’m 44 if that makes any difference

Just had to leave the playground early with my dd as pain in left side and flooding/clots again. Have had this at night which is one thing, but out with denim shorts on was awful, had to put towel down on the car seat,
Does this require emergency? Has anyone had heavy bleeding and clots for so long?

Covid might be merely a coincidence at your age - it's possible you're in perimenopause. I'd push for the appropriate tests for that if I were you.

Pigsears · 16/07/2022 14:20

During peri- periods can be erratic.

Get them to check your levels when you see them.

If you have been flooding intermittently for 5 weeks day and night- then i think you need to be seen quicker than 3 weeks due to bloodloss. GP? Emergency room? (Not sure where you are..)

Not a Dr or medical at all...

Pigsears · 16/07/2022 14:21

Iron levels....

mum2jakie · 16/07/2022 14:23

Yes, me too! I have been to the GP for internal exam and blood tests. I'm anaemic although whether that is a cause or just a symptom of losing so much blood I don't know. They also suspect fibroids but I will need to have a scan to confirm. I'm 46.

Feelsyuk · 16/07/2022 14:31

@mum2jakie What did the internal show?

OP posts:
Feelsyuk · 16/07/2022 14:31

@mum2jakie How long have you had bleeding?

@mum2jakie What did the internal show?

Signs of a prolopse but the GP didn't think that was likely to be r

mum2jakie · 16/07/2022 14:37

Related, sorry and suspects fibroids are the cause of the consistent bleeding. I am still bleeding on and off - been a couple of months now. I have a bloody/mucous discharge on the days when I don't actually bleed and then a run of heavy bleeding again with clots. It is awful and leaving me feeling exhausted, even after starting the iron tablets.

Plasmodesmata · 16/07/2022 15:04

I have this. For me, it's one of the joys of peri-menopause, started when I was about 46. Sometimes I have a long gap between periods, and then get them all at once, for weeks at a time. Go see the Dr as they may be able to give you medication to slow the bleeding, and ask for a blood test to check you are not anaemic.

If you are worried about how much blood you are losing seek more immediate medical attention.

InUseAlready · 16/07/2022 15:10

I had Covid in Feb then one very light period, then my next period in April was like you describe. Lots of flooding, large clots and lasted six weeks. During this time I got a referral for an internal ultrasound but by the time of my appointment the bleeding had stopped and my periods were pretty much back to normal. So the scan didn’t show anything to worry about.

I’m a similar age to you so it’s hard to know whether it’s to do with being peri menopausal or not. But my gut feeling is that it was related to my having had covid.

Ponderingwindow · 16/07/2022 15:21

I had near constant heavy periods with flooding and clots at one point. It turned out to be a fibroid. That had to be treated surgically

Years later, I still have heavy periods with clots due to scar tissue, but it is manageable. They have become erratic again now that I am in peri, though thankfully seem to be getting a bit lighter month by month

at no point has it been an emergency. Massively Inconvenient, yes. Painful, yes.

you should probably take an iron supplement as a precaution. It’s very easy to become anemic. Just the regular recommended dose as it is easy to over do it on iron.

of course, if at some point you just feel like it has become an emergency, seek treatment. I would never tell a woman to ignore her instincts.

Feelsyuk · 16/07/2022 16:10

@mum2jakie I have a slight rectocele that I’m fine with, so don’t think it’s that 🤷🏻‍♀️

Feelsyuk · 16/07/2022 16:13

@InUseAlready Yes, am hoping it’s just from covid and will be over soon. Was the bleeding and clots heavy? It stops completely for a couple of days then can be light, then a day of heavy bleeding again with clots

@Ponderingwindow That’s reassuring, thank you 🙏 it’s hard to know if I should be doing something about it. Just lay here on a towel waiting (hoping) for it to pass, has soaked through three pads

OP posts:
Feelsyuk · 16/07/2022 16:15

@Ponderingwindow Not three pads put together, just changing them
How much did you bleed?

KangarooKenny · 16/07/2022 16:16

I’d say peri menopause too, you might want to consider a coil. I’m glad I had one.

Feelsyuk · 16/07/2022 16:21

@KangarooKenny What will that do?

OP posts:
KangarooKenny · 16/07/2022 16:22

It usually stops periods.
you need to get your iron checked when you see the doctor.

ThreeLittleDots · 16/07/2022 16:27

The mini pill (as well as the mirena coil) also invariably stops your periods, after initial annoying spotting for a few months, that is (both of them)

Peanutlicious · 16/07/2022 16:39

Due to extreme stress I missed three consecutive periods and then had a horrendous three week period, exactly as you describe. I spoke with gp who said it was because the lining of the womb had built up so much and it would stop naturally. I was given iron tablets and it did stop, lasted 3.5 weeks in total. Period has been fine since and that was four years ago.
