Sports day on Tuesday?

SunHasNotGotHisHatOn · 16/07/2022 07:14

I keep seeing posts saying schools and work will be closed on Monday/Tuesday. My school is not only staying open, but they’re holding sports day still! AIBU to keep the kids off?

Quite honestly

a school with a decision maker this illogical is not the kind of school I would want my children at!!

So… no I would not attend the sports day and I would like at alternative school options

araiwa · 16/07/2022 07:17

They'll probably tell you it's cancelled on monday

Ohthatsexciting · 16/07/2022 07:18

Oh wait

i thought the school was closing but they were still holding sports day!!

Whereabouts are you?

where I am - 38 degrees forecast so would be unreasonable
but who knows forecast where you are if you don’t specific?!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/07/2022 07:24

Well that's a stupid decision - surely someone is for the high-jump there?
😂

Our sports days at primary school always involved lots of water games and mucking about. Wet welly throwing, water pistols, slip and slides. We had non water bits too but not stuff that takes ages. Was really just an excuse to play outside for the day. We would have a few races in the afternoon but they didn't last long.

Probably the best day for it

And none of that anyway at my children’s primary

That sucks, although this was over 20 years ago so things have probably changed. I loved sports day and I was the fat kid who couldn't run to save my life. It was really inclusive and just a great fun day.

Sirzy · 16/07/2022 07:34

If you are in a red warning area then I would without doubt.

unless there is somewhere with full shade I would expect schools to be keeping children inside all day

BogRollBOGOF · 16/07/2022 07:40

If it's first thing in the morning it will be several degrees cooler than the peak in the late afternoon. Hot, but not at unprecedented levels. If it's 1pm after lunch, that's a different consideration.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 16/07/2022 07:58

If they're making sure the kids are in the shade between races and have water and sun cream then they'll probably be more comfortable spending the day out on the field rather than in the classroom.

I've seen a few schools appealing for parents and businesses to lend gazebos and such like so they can create loads of shade outdoors and it seems like a good idea to me.

PuttingDownRoots · 16/07/2022 08:03

Someone will be along shortly saying they cope in hotter countries...

My DDs school in such a country had their sports day in March, when it was about 20 degrees not July when it was 35+.
It also was over by 11am.

In the summer, the advice for sport was early mornings only or indoors.

SunHasNotGotHisHatOn · 16/07/2022 08:16

Sorry, I should have clarified! Yes in a red warning. They’ve not said anything about water or needing a change of clothes, it’s a primary so I’m assuming they’d ask for a change of clothes if they were planning a water fight? It’s due to start at 10am

My two LOVE their sports day!

ReneBumsWombats · 16/07/2022 08:20

That's insanity. Keep them off.

I'm seeing a number of threads whinging that people are overreacting to this, but as long as this shit is going on, someone has to do the risk assessment. Some lunatic teacher is still planning for a bloody DoE hike to go ahead.

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 16/07/2022 08:25

We've moved ours from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday morning.

So many parents were ranting about the change pick up yesterday and on dojo.

You can't win.

AhhSlippedOnMahBeansRitaaa · 16/07/2022 08:25

Our school have cancelled sports day that was planned for Tuesday as it's forecast 35. They sent a letter containing local government guidance so they may be waiting to hear from the council. How is your school for communication usually?

SunHasNotGotHisHatOn · 16/07/2022 08:32

@AhhSlippedOnMahBeansRitaaa they like to text the day something is due :)

They might be scrabbling to find an alternative. I have seen a few desperate tweets from schools looking for ‘something fun’ for children who have had activities cancelled.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 11/06/2023 18:17

Why is school and work closed? I’ve not seen anything about this.

if it’s because of the heat then schools can ask for the kids to be wearingsuncream, sunhats, cotton clothes and provide plenty of extra drinks.

Most of sports day is sitting down while the others do their events.

Parents will have booked time off work and that can be really tricky (understatement) to change at short notice.

This thread is from last year when the temperature was 40+.

This thread is a year old. You have searched. Why then ask a question?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 11/06/2023 18:34

@beachsandseaicecream @KitchenSinkLlama sorry!

it came up in my list of ‘Trending’ threads - I have no idea why! I didn’t spot that it was a year old, didn’t check tbh as trending threads are generally current ones, but it all makes much more sense now!
