Should the UK public be able to vote on who is the next PM?

I think we should be able to. At the end of the day, whoever it will be, will be in charge of our entire country so why should we not get a say in it?

YABU - no. We shouldn’t be able to vote on who the PM is

YANBU - yes that would be a good idea

No, we don't have a president

If the Tories didn't decapitate their party quite so often, then no-one would be proposing that we should.

NotEnoughMud · 15/07/2022 17:49

But we don't even vote for the PM in a general election, we vote for our MP and the party choose the PM. It's the same thing. I think people forget this is actually how our democracy works.

FWIW - I'd love to have a say...

Imissprosecco · 15/07/2022 17:52

No. That's not how our system works. We vote for our own MP, not for a leader

Catsdrool · 15/07/2022 17:54

It’s not X factor.

X factor gets better contestants

Womenandwomenfirst · 15/07/2022 18:01

OP, I suggest you buy a book on this country’s constitution. GCSE Politics books explain things clearly.

JemimaPuddleducksWaddle · 15/07/2022 18:01

We aren't a presidential system.

The past few priministers have called elections not long after. Whether this one will is up to them.

Brown waited until it was time for one. So a few years after.

HandlebarLadyTash · 15/07/2022 18:01

My local MP is as awful as Boris the cunt

GabriellaMontez · 15/07/2022 18:03

No.

curiousitygotthebetterofme · 15/07/2022 18:04

Ok I guess IABU

YANBU. It strikes me as bizarre that we don't get any say in who's going to run our country.

Not that it's likely to make much difference given the current shower, admittedly, but there's a principle involved imho.

the80sweregreat · 15/07/2022 18:06

I know that this is the process and is what it is , but 160,000 thousand people will be able to vote and that annoys me more than it should really
Plus it's in a three yearly cycle recently too ..
It's a bit of a farce, but whoever gets the top job will have a poisoned chalice.

B0ssAssB1tch · 15/07/2022 18:06

That would require the entire election system to be changed. So no.

feistyoneyouare · 15/07/2022 18:06

Catsdrool · 15/07/2022 17:54

It’s not X factor.

What an odd comparison. Neither is a general election, but the people get to vote in that.

topcat2014 · 15/07/2022 18:08

I have a vote. Who would you like me to vote for?

B0ssAssB1tch · 15/07/2022 18:09

But you're not voting for the PM in a general election either. You vote for your local MP.

Bit worrying how many people think their vote is actually for or against the prime minister. Unless you live in their constituency.

Neolara · 15/07/2022 18:11

I think the MPs, who are elected by us, should vote for who they want to be PM.

the80sweregreat · 15/07/2022 18:13

The figures of people who can vote ( all of them conservatives) is between 160 and 200,000 people spread around the UK, deciding our future and which taxes to cut and how to deal with all the problems we all face. Which are huge.
It just feels a bit unjust , although they are the rules so we will all have to suck it up I suppose.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 15/07/2022 18:15

No, why would we totally change our system?

Suedomin · 15/07/2022 18:15

We can't unless we completely change how our system works. In theory it will be the same Government as the one elected in 2019. The mandate the Government has is for the promises made in the Conservatives Manifesto in 2019 and whoever the leader of the Tory Party is they have to abide by that Manifesto. If the new leader proposes not to do that then they need to call an election.
We vote for an MP not for the leader of a party which is why it was a nonsense for Johnson to say he had a personal mandate , he didn't.

Just like we did in the last recession with Brown.

Discovereads · 15/07/2022 18:16

I think we should have a General Election when in the situation we are in where the PM has been forced to resign. The fact the party can just pick a new leader and PM is not fair. It’s not just the PM that has failed, the whole party has failed at governance and so shouldn’t be allowed to stay in control.

the80sweregreat · 15/07/2022 18:17

Fair enough about Brown ! But this will be the fourth leader in six years !! It's becoming a theme. Plus those are the rules , so have to see what happens.
