A4 size bag only for UEFA matches

Going to watch the Lionesses tonight! Hooray! But we're only allowed an A4 sized bag. I know why the bag policy is in place but...

  1. it's anti-women, since women are less likely to have pockets and more likely to need to carry things (sanitary items etc)
  2. it's anti-parent, because we inevitably end up with kids' stuff too. What am I going to do with the three pairs of sunglasses I'm sure to acquire?
Plus I've just measured a large selection of our bags and they are all two or three centimetres too wide! So it's not like I can hand a bag of sunglasses to a kid. Gah.

How many tampons do you need for one evening?

I just take a small cross over bag with essentials in when I go to football matches.

AffIt · 15/07/2022 17:06

Been standard for most games at rugby venues in Scotland (Murrayfield / Scotstoun) for a while, now.

Oneofthosedreadfulparents · 15/07/2022 17:11

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz but is it bigger than A4? That's cheating if so.

As a Southampton supporter I will tell you the seats are very compact and the bar area isn't massive either, so that might be why.

As a Southampton supporter

You have my deepest sympathy

TakeYourFinalPosition · 15/07/2022 17:13

This has been standard in a few places for quite a while now. Certainly at all the recent cricket games I've been to, as well as football. I haven't been to any rugby in a while, so I've no idea if they do it.

I don't tend to take a bag if it's just me going, and my changing bag (6-month-old) complies with the A4 rule.

It just sounds like you're not too keen on going, to be honest, so everything is frustrating you. I hope you have fun anyway.

ghostyslovesheets · 15/07/2022 17:14

do men regularly carry A4 sized bags AND use pockets - the bastards

User5386509 · 15/07/2022 17:14

I went to a concert and had to take an A4 bag with no more than 2 compartments, I ended up buying one from Primark for about £3-£4 which was very small. I was annoyed then when I saw people inside with much bigger bags than A4

Florenz · 15/07/2022 17:15

It's to prevent hooligans smuggling weapons in.

user1471464218 · 15/07/2022 17:18

At New York stadium last night nobody checked bag size that closely - I would chance one that's 4cm too big. I had a plastic carrier bag with a drink each (as due to heat you are now allowed a 500ml bottle of water each) and some sweets, and I was planning to hand each child their own drink to carry in (to keep the bag size down) but it wasn't necessary.

Againstmachine · 15/07/2022 17:22

Are women not allowed clothes with pockets, saying this is sexist is just bonkers, take what you need and no unnecessary stuff.

MMAMPWGHAP · 15/07/2022 17:37

It’s not an airport. They won’t measure the bag to the last cm. Give each child a snack bar or two to put in their pocket. Take a carrier bag in your A4 bag to put the discarded tops in when you’re through security.
I know where you’re coming from. It’s so much easier just to take your normal bag.

SarahSteedman82 · 15/07/2022 17:43

It completely normal and you seem to be making a mountain out of a molehill. Men manage to rock up with a wallet,.phone and keys with or without their kids and get along just fine, they don't worry about an extra top for when it cools off as it really doesn't matter. Don't go if it's bothering you this much.

FrankLampardsBrokenHand · 15/07/2022 17:47

I go to a lot of football matches and I'm yet to take a bag with me so I don't really understand the need for the drama in all honesty. An A4 sized bag (each!!) seems massive considering I generally just have my phone in one pocket and keys in another.

Ontomatopea · 15/07/2022 17:50

I only have a sodding handbag in the first place because half my clothes don't have big enough pockets for my phone. (All DH's pockets are big enough, by the way, but he hates sport and crowds so I'm going instead.) if your OP was about this then I think people would be agreeing with you BTW. Stupid lack of pockets.

ExtraOnion · 15/07/2022 17:51

I’m a season ticket holder … I’ve never known a bag size rule at matches. It would be a nightmare in winter,., where would my flask go, never mind my blanket.

Lovelydovey · 15/07/2022 17:51

Yep a cheap drawstring bag which is slightly bigger (ie would hold an a4 folder) has always been accepted. The children take their own bags (usually goals or powerleague party bags) with their own drinks.

50mg · 15/07/2022 17:54

The only secret thing I can see here is the stereotype that women can't function without a big bag full of stuff.

50mg · 15/07/2022 17:56

Sexist thing 😆

Wolfcub · 15/07/2022 17:59

It's not anti women. I manage perfectly well at concerts with an a4 bag and can normally fit a 500ml bottle of water in there plus other stuff. Even with kids you don't need the kitchen sink

Wolfcub · 15/07/2022 18:00

Alternatively buy clothes with pockets, they are available for women

ST holder here too - no restrictions at my club but definitely is at Man Utd (think it's smaller than a4, pretty sure it's not much bigger than a purse there) and they had restrictions when we went to Brentford away a few years back. Though in fairness to Brentford there was no space at all in that away end

traintraveller · 15/07/2022 18:06

I have a season ticket and a season pass and this is normal, has been for a while now. In all my years of going to games I have never needed to take a bag. Probably cause I buy clothes that have this wee compartment to put stuff in.

Camomila · 15/07/2022 18:23

DH and DS1 have gone to see the football tonight and it took ages finding a tiny enough bag - I actually think the tiny bag scenario is easier for women who tend to own handbags, DH doesn't have anything smaller than a messenger bag.

They are using DS2s toddler rucksack. (The type that comes with reins but without the reins) I've tied DS1s hoody round his waist.

Ted27 · 15/07/2022 18:56

no bag or small bag is fine for a gig or 90 minute match. If you are going to a 6 hour + athletics meeting or the four hour basketball championships we went to in February then you do need more than your purse and keys or be forced to pay inflated prices for a bottle of water and some food.
Being the UK Ive spent a day at an athletics meeting and needed both waterproofs and warm tops, two hours later slapping on the sun cream
