To not want to clean my walls

SaraJS216 · 15/07/2022 12:40

I'm planning on a deep clean of my home and making a list of things to clean on top of the usual dusting etc. Just been googling and have read about cleaning walls.. I've never cleaned walls in my life (other than spot cleaning if DD has thrown food at the kitchen wall). I feel like if I follow the advice of everything that needs cleaning it'll literally take me days and it's stressing me out!

Anyone who's recently done a thorough clean, what did it involve and did you clean your walls?!

@Carrieonmywaywardsun that is cleaning!! (Removing dust and dirt)🤣🤣🤣

TheCanyon · 15/07/2022 16:23

I clean my walls all the time. The cat seems to be some kind of ninja cat who likes to run sideways along the stairs wall after jumping over the stair gate. I use a microfiber window cleaner thing and a spray like flash, takes minutes.

Christ, don't ask on here what items people clean, they'll come up with a whole list of things it has never before occurred to you to clean.

BTW, did you know that it is illegal in the UK to do deep cleaning or any other type of indoor household chore during periods of good weather?

It's so rare that we get weather like this that it's immoral to waste it on 'deep cleaning'. The dust will still be there when the weather is gone, but the weather might not be still there when the dust is gone Smile

Absolutely!

I never set out one morning and decide "Today is the day I clean the walls". Hell no! What generally happens is that the grimy smudges reach tip-over point and I finally notice them enough to care. Then I grab a cloth and start cleaning. I doubt I've ever done everything I listed in my previous post in one cleaning session 🤣🤣🤣

How do you even clean a whole wall?

You take all of the pictures off, get a bucket of hot soapy water (purple morning fresh washing up liquid is fantastic), a cloth and a towel. wash a meter sq at a time, wash and wipe dry, easy. You will be amazed at how much dirt comes off and how great the walls will look afterwards.

User5386509 · 15/07/2022 16:37

it's something we do before painting them so the paint goes on properly not part of any general cleaning unless something dirty goes on them then I just wipe it off. A deep clean to me means moving some furniture and vacuuming underneath and wiping skirting boards.

HannahSternDefoe · 15/07/2022 16:37

I use a dry vileda mop. You'd be amazed how much dust and how many cobwebs it catches. Blush
I don't do them often, and then only when the room is in full sun (but on a cool day) so I can see where I've been.

@TheCanyon i feel this may be my future as I’ve just bought two huge cat trees and have 5 monsters vying to see who can reach the ceiling…

I meant clean as in wash! Words aren't working today 😳

There was a whole thread about exactly this a few weeks ago. The overwhelming consensus was that cleaning one's wall is bonkers.*

*spot cleaning fine

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/07/2022 18:39

@Carrieonmywaywardsun - doesn’t matter, You’ve still removed the dirt ! It still counts towards a congratulatory cake.

(I am 90% cake)

ChinBristles · 15/07/2022 18:55

Yes to dusting them when I see some dust bunnies hanging off.
No to anything involving a wet cloth.

I'm not nearly as cakey as you, I'll remove the dirt on my banisters to catch up!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/07/2022 20:25

@Carrieonmywaywardsun 🤣🤣🤣 I’ll be waiting halfway up the stairs with the eclairs..

Stevie6 · 15/07/2022 20:39

I wash mine quite a lot but have big dogs who like to rub against them, you can't just do half the wall as you can notice the difference

theemmadilemma · 15/07/2022 20:44

I have two large bull breed dogs so spot cleaning walls is part of my weekly clean.

BUT, I did a deep clean after 18 months here and did wash down the walls and oh dear the difference! Eventually spot cleaning doesn't work and it needs a proper wipe down. It didn't take long with soapy water and a tea towel to dry.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/07/2022 21:05

I'll occasionally damp dust the walls if they're looking vaguely tired/ grubby. It doesn't need doing often, but does freshen rooms up again.

It's over 10 years since our lounge was decorated when there was only a baby#1, but it still looks fresh and in good nick.

I recently did the kitchen wall because I wasn't sure if there were shaddowy marks from the light angle or rising from the radiator.

That's the sweetest thing I've ever read 😍

Meraas · 15/07/2022 21:11

The only time we scrubbed all the walls down was prior to painting them.

Now we just dust.

DrDetriment · 15/07/2022 14:35

This.

My Farrow and Ball paint marks if you breathe on it. I'd love to see how it looks if I wiped it all down.

👀

mathanxiety · 15/07/2022 21:16

I've cleaned walls during a deep clean. I used a floor squeegee with a microfiber cloth draped over it. I used washing soda/ sugar soap and water.
