Constant weight/ body image chat

I've been away with my group of friends a few times in the last year for weekends etc, every single time weight/ looks/ image gets brought up multiple times, mostly in the context of how someone has gained 5lbs so now they're huge and disgusting or they've got a few grey hairs so they now must be incredibly unattractive to men etc etc. There are a couple of members of the friendship group who are a bit heavier than the rest and I always notice they just sit so awkwardly and don't join in with the "oh I'm so fat" talk and I genuinely wonder how the rest of my friends don't pick up on it and realise its making them uncomfortable. I used to be a lot bigger than I am now so I guess maybe I see both sides easier but it's so infuriating to me, especially because the ones that do talk like that about themselves are the thinnest and prettiest (and they know it)

Your 'friends' sound boring, tactless, shallow and self absorbed.

monsterastuckiosa · 15/07/2022 12:25

They don't pick up on it because nobody's calling them out on it.

They sound vile – why are you spending time with them?

Hillrunning · 15/07/2022 12:27

What do you do? Why not jsut shut it down,
'Oh gosh, I'm sure we can think of better things to talk about than bodies! Many how was that course last month?'

Youdoyoutoday · 15/07/2022 12:34

Yep been there and it's shite!

Out with friends, all couples so the guys chat footie and work, ladies chat about weight! All of them thinner than me, chatting about how being a size 18 is awful whilst I, myself am a size 18, it's hugely demoralising and I'm so glad I'm not a part of that group anymore!

Don’t engage and change the subject if you can.

Interestingly, in my life the people who might have indulged in that sort of behaviour have ended up, single, married, then the DHs have had affairs & got divorced in the time I've remained fat, grey & hairy.

Get new friends or shine a light on how tactless/rude they are being...
