To be worried about newborn in next week's heatwave

My first baby is 4 days old, so we're all still figuring things out! But I'm so worried about keeping her cool next week when the temperature is meant to top 40 degrees.

Any top tips??

Fan in room but not directly on baby , you can also put a bowl of cold water in front of fan with ice cubes in, try to create a natural breeze in the house by have windows open front and back of house , keep Sun from getting in room.
Wipe baby down with tepid water.

@Newgirlmummy if you use Instagram "MidwifePip" has some really useful advice about newborns / babies in hot weather. Obviously speak to your own midwife first, but if you wanted extra reassurance her account is very good.

A cool, but not cold flannel to wipe their hands and feet with helps. Cold damp tea towel over a fan in front of a window lets some good cool air in. Try to stay still and calm. Curtains closed- if they let in any light hang a blanket over the window too.

I had a baby in last years heatwave. Babies love to be hot so don't worry too much, but I wouldn't take them outside. Just stay at home, chill, plenty of feeds for them and water for you.

Thank you all! Yes will definitely chat with my midwife tomorrow too.

I am trying to breastfeed, but we're both still learning and it's a bit of a challenge at the moment. Another reason I'm so worried about her not getting enough food/hydration. Do have some formula on standby too

Ask the midwife tomorrow for some colostrum syringes, that helped me no end when I was starting to bf

Skin to skin is counter-intuitive but is how they regulate their temperatures so just keep stripped down and cuddled up. Will help with the breast feeding too.

If the air is hotter outside than the temp inside, it's best to keep the windows shut after about 11am (not just the curtains). We do this and it makes a massive difference - there's no point having the windows open if it's just bringing hot air into the house.
