To have covid tested my child

Dd, age 11 and year 6, woke up yesterday with a temperature, headache and aching legs. I got her to do a lateral flow test as she was worried it might be covid. It was positive. Today is her big end of year 6 ‘fun day’ (bouncy castles, circus workshops, picnic etc etc) and she’s totally inconsolable about missing it. DH has pointed out, in front of her, that shes only missing the fun day because I tested her, we shouldn’t have tested, that there will be lots of other children at school unknowingly with covid and he thinks she should still go in. She’s not 100% but feeling a lot better than yesterday, no temperature. I think we should keep her off (tested again this morning at her request and it’s still strongly positive). Who’s being unreasonable here - am I unreasonable to have tested her and be keeping her home?

I agree with your husband.

I don't and have never tested my kids.

I’m with your husband. Poor kid.

I wouldn’t send her because of the temperature yesterday, regardless of why she had it. It’s not a good day to be bouncing around in the heat.

It's not hot everywhere. Currently 17C and cloudy where I am.

However, agree that sending a child to school with a highly infectious virus on the last day of term would be irresponsible and selfish. She would pass it on to other kids and their families, just as people are about to go off on holidays and so on. She will miss one day of fun, which is rotten, but these things happen.

DisappearingGirl · 15/07/2022 10:37

I think you did the right thing OP. A cold is one thing, but I think we should avoid sending kids to school if we know they have a virus which can make people really ill - whether it's COVID, flu, D+V, chicken pox. If she gives it to people it could ruin whole family holidays at the start of summer hols. I'd definitely take her somewhere nice with a friend when she is better. It is rubbish though

Split opinion here too then - thanks for all the replies. I was feeling awful this morning, but it was the right thing for her to keep her off - she’s hardly managed to eat anything, and is feeling pretty grotty again. She wouldn’t have managed a whole day running around on the field anyway (even having a shower exhausted her). It’s not her last day luckily - they’re still in next week, and as long as she’s well on Monday I can send her in for the last few days, the leavers assembly etc. I’ve always been more cautious than DH about covid as I’ve lost two friends to it in the last couple of years.

I wouldn't have tested either.

Lazypuppy · 15/07/2022 13:35

I wouldn't have tested, if she was too ill to send in then same as other illnesses, if she was fine to go to school then i would have taken her

canyon2000 · 15/07/2022 14:05

But she will still be infectious on Monday won't she if she tested positive on Thursday? She would only have completed her 5 days of isolation at the end of Tuesday so could go to school on the Wednesday.

DIYandEatCake · 15/07/2022 14:28

Right or wrong, the current advised isolation for children is only 3 days (5 days for adults). I’ve spoken with her school and they’ve said she should go back Monday as long as she’s well. I’ll obviously see how she is and not send her if she’s poorly.

The selfishness of this is astounding.

@10HailMarys I’m not talking about the weather, the child had a high temperature yesterday and it’s not advisable to exercise with an elevated body temperature.
