£92 curtains… taking the piss

Hi all,

My sister has returned home from her student accommodation halls recently. She handed in her keys and received the email this morning confirming her departure and about her deposit…

She was charged £92 for bloody replacement CURTAINS Shock

That is almost her entire deposit gone. Before coming home she spent nearly two full days deep cleaning her room and the kitchen. She’s pissed off and upset to say the least and has to ‘top up’ the deposit since she’s staying in the same accommodation next year.

AIBU to think this takes the piss? She’s a clean and respectful students and i fully believe her when she said she left everything in perfect order. Seems so unfair and grabby from these accommodation companies!! Also £92? What the hell are these curtains made of?

Can you contact the university directly to question this?

Mousemat25 · 14/07/2022 23:15

£92 is dirt cheap for curtains!

MarshaMelrose · 14/07/2022 23:16

Why do the curtains need replacing? Has she damaged them?

GCHeretic · 14/07/2022 23:18

You’ve left out the pretty important details about whether she damaged the curtains or not.

If she did then £92 is very cheap. If she didn’t then she needs to challenge the claim and explain where they have gone wrong.

Bunty55 · 14/07/2022 23:21

What did she do to the curtains ?

xyzandabc · 14/07/2022 23:25

Did the curtains need replacing? Or did she leave them in the same condition as when she moved in?
If they did need replacing, £92 isn't extortionate. Cost of curtains plus admin fees for time taken to purchase them and then hang the new ones.
If they didn't need replacing them she needs to dispute the charge.

kindereggxo · 14/07/2022 23:25

Curtains were not damaged. She throughly checked the room before she left. As mentioned she is calm and well behaved girl, i can’t imagine how someone could damage curtains anyway!

My curtains were £65 but £90 to put in. Curtain guy said made to measure are 400

Just seen your update

Cigarette burn, cigarette smoke, letting them flap out of the window and get marked, someone pulling on them, a young gentleman using them to wipe his man parts clean as he’s leaving post-coitus and so on.

She needs to ask what they think happened to them, and take it from there.

MarshaMelrose · 14/07/2022 23:29

I never knew a rental place that changed you for when they decided something needed replacing through natural age or wear and tear. That's what your rent's for.
Your deposit is to cover damage or expenses they've incurred to make good, eg cleaning. I'd tell her to get out her lease agreement and give it a good read.

Amipreg1 · 14/07/2022 23:33

Who the hell would put curtains worth £92 in a student place!

They're being ridiculous.

Herbaceousborder · 14/07/2022 23:36

," a young gentleman using them to wipe his man parts clean as he’s leaving post-coitus and so on."
Wow, what an image and why would the young gentleman leave via the window.

NoSquirrels · 14/07/2022 23:38

Does she have

a) what they’re alleging happened to the curtains in writing, with photo evidence from them?
b) her own photo evidence of how it was left clean and I damaged?
c) a copy of the check-in inventory?
d) a copy of the deposit scheme info?

Bunty55 · 14/07/2022 23:40

OP Have you thought she might be being economical with the truth ?

woody87 · 14/07/2022 23:41

I just bought a "cheap" pair of curtains for £95, the ones I wanted were £500 but who has that kind of money.

I would be asking why they need replaced. Something fishy going on here.

Ah, no, you misunderstand. The curtains are used on the way to the door.

The verb is to Zuffle.

She should complain!

cathcath2 · 14/07/2022 23:51

Ask them for evidence that the curtains have been damaged and evidence that they have been replaced. Did she take photos before she left?

Charlize43 · 14/07/2022 23:53

£92 is very cheap for curtain.

cathcath2 · 14/07/2022 23:54

Was her deposit protected?

Madmaxxy · 15/07/2022 00:00

Regardless of the perceived cost of curtains, obviously if she genuinely hadn't damaged the curtains she'd be taking it up with them instead of having you post about it on here....

RJnomore1 · 15/07/2022 00:02

Did she take time stamped photos at the end of her tenancy?

Goldencarp · 15/07/2022 00:03

Agree that she should ask f for photographic evidence of the “damage”. If there is damage though then £92 is really cheap for curtains!
