To ask for tips to cool bedrooms

Any tips for keeping baby’s bedroom cool this weekend/ next week? We keep the curtains closed and a window open but its stifling.
any radical solutions like covering window area with cardboard (would that work?!)

Get the rest of the house as cool as possible, and leave baby’s bedroom door open.

BuffaloCauliflower · 14/07/2022 21:35

Yes covering with foil or cardboard helps, foil reflects away. If you have a loft hatch, open it, helps to cool the whole house. A fan if you can, not pointed at baby but still circulates air in the room. Our toddlers room doesn’t have a door on, just a gate, which helps the air not get stuck in there and we have the fan pointed through the gate but not in the room

I've seen covering windows with aluminium cooking foil recommended. Worth a Google!
What age is baby?

minipie · 14/07/2022 21:37

If you have double glazing it works best to keep windows shut (as well as curtains) on the sunny side of the house until the main heat has passed. Only open after say 6pm.

I give my kids freezer blocks in pillowcases to sleep with, but they are older, maybe use a block to cool the bed before bedtime?

If you have any N facing rooms I’d consider moving the baby in there for a few days

I had a real issue with my baby's room in my old house - on hot days it would easily climb to 25+ and it was awful. I would keep window shut and use a black out stick on blind with a silver reflective back (check Amazon), and then close curtains too - keep it like this ALL day. Then point a fan directly at an external wall (must be external), and shut the bedroom door. I found the room dropped by an extra 2 degrees when I did the fan trick - it pushes air against the brick wall which cools it. When the temp drops at night, open the window to let cool air in and then have fan on rotation pointed at cot.

SandAndSea · 14/07/2022 21:43

Opening windows can let the hot air in. I've been keeping windows and curtains shut all day, just opening some windows at night when it's cooler. (Security issues allowing, ofc.)

I've also been keeping the kitchen door shut as this has been the warmest room.

Plus, we're using a fan intermittently.

This has all been working well for us so far.

I'm considering wetting the bedding a bit with cold water, to aid cooling at night.

WalkingOnSonshine · 14/07/2022 21:47

Keep the windows closed until outside is cooler than inside. No

Fan with a bowl of ice water in front will help.

Take down any black out blinds etc in the day, but keep blinds closed if the sun shines directly on the window.

We’ve managed to keep DS’ room at about 23 doing this.

RedSquirrelRoar · 14/07/2022 22:35

My dad (a heating engineer) used to hang a wet towel at the window at night if it was hot - the water evaporates and cools the air coming in.

Thanks for this. Some of my curtains need a wash anyway so I might wash them and then hang them back up whilst they're still wet.

I think we'll be sleeping downstairs next week - it's so much cooler.

WhatsInAMolatovMocktail · 14/07/2022 22:50

My mum used to put a sheet in the freezer for an hour before bed!

I bought some cheap blackout fabric on eBay, and a curtain wire with a set of 3 little hooks to stick along the wall. Simply pegged the curtain up on the wire.
the trick is to cover the whole window as perfectly as you can and not leave gaps for hot air to sneak past. It has radically reduced the heat coming in through our glass front door, and is easy to take up and down. Even dh has been grudgingly impressed by it!

ThinWomansBrain · 14/07/2022 22:52

As well as keeping the curtains closed, add thermal liners.
Ikea used to do quite cheap setachable ones, may still have them

Bit pricier, but I love my dyson humidifier in this weather.

Confusedteatowel · 14/07/2022 22:54

Windows shut until it's cooler outside than it is inside.

Loft hatch open if you have one

Frozen 2l bottle of water in front of a fan

Our house is 'upside down' due to being on a hillside.

Definitely has its advantages when it's very hot.

I have blackout/ thermal curtains, they're are fantastic.

Cold Water bottle in bed instead of a hot one.

tigerbear · 15/07/2022 01:06

I’ve just bought a cool mat from Amazon, which I plan to put in the freezer for a little while before bed, then put under the fitted sheet.

ThrallsWife · 15/07/2022 06:10

A few bottles of water, frozen - ideally on a shelf above or hanging on/ around baby's bed.

The heat will melt the ice before warming the water, and both take a good while to work because water's heat capacity is high.

Snowraingain · 15/07/2022 06:27

Get a muslin and run it under cold water. Squeeze out the access then put in over their legs or around your neck. It really cools you down.

mrpopperspenguinbiscuits · 15/07/2022 18:14

Thanks all, really helpful
baby is nine months

We put white paper over our glass front door and it's very effective in keeping some of the heat out.

aussiechick01 · 15/07/2022 18:19

I’m originally from far north Australia. Open all windows in early morning- close windows and curtain’s when outside air warms up. When it starts to cool down open windows and position tan at window pointing into room. A shallow tray of water in front of the fan works similar to a wet sheet - the air cools down as the water evaporates.

PizzaPatel · 15/07/2022 18:19

As others have suggested iced water/a frozen water bottle in front of a fan acts as a sort of home made air con - it really works.

are you doing night feeds? Maybe pass a damp cloth over legs, neck, arms and armpits each time you do a night feed.

i think my baby and I are going to change bedroom on Monday and Tuesday nights
