Towels on sunbeds abroad.

Just read an article about people getting up early on holiday to save a sun bed with a towel. I really don’t understand why people do this. First come first serve I say. How silly.

Cyprus in May hotel was awful for this. At first I was aghast. Dh up early saw people at 5am scurrying around laying claim to sunbeds. Then often not returning to them till late morning. The ethos was "be fast or be last".

But once we had found a space with some spare loungers we realised that people just go back to the same area every day and the same sun loungers were available to us every time we needed them, without the need to set a bloody alarm and get down there. Ridiculous. But people are aren't they. 🙄

Haha, search sun bed dash on YouTube.
Mad scenes.

Toottooot · 14/07/2022 20:41

Has this only just come to your attention? Far hiv yi been the last few years? It’s nae a new thing.

SuperCamp · 14/07/2022 20:43

I have been in hotels where if a sun bed is left unoccupied for a period of time, they remove your stuff and put it in a box for you to collect.

BakedTattie · 14/07/2022 20:43

how Have you only just realised this? This has been happening since the invention of sunbeds 😂

Thatboymum · 14/07/2022 20:47

I’m just back from Portugal and people were laying the towels down at like 7.30am they’d sit for an hour then disappear till late afternoon and nobody could use the beds which were in high demand for hours and it’s never just one bed it was like groups so loads of beds that could be free but weren’t , honestly if I see one vacant for over an hour I happily move the towel to the side and use it and if they say anything I’m not shy in defending myself as they don’t own the bloody beds 🤦🏼‍♀️ One day a family of 4 put towels down before breakfast I spent the whole day at the pool they were nowhere to be seen and around 5pm came back to realise people had sat there towels to the side and taken there beds the people were in the pool and the dad of the family lost his shit was verbally abusive and flung the peoples things in the pool I was horrified. Some people are just pig ignorant

Yep. The hotel we go to every year or so they do this. If your lounger is unattended for an hour the pool staff put the towels in what we call the box of shame. It's great, I fully approve.

I've seen people kick off about it too, after towel hogging a bed at 7am then not coming to the pool til 2pm. We applauded the lifeguard and the man stomped off.

We went to a Caribbean Sandals resort in March.

Bagging your sunbed is definitely a ‘thing’ there. If you don’t, the butlers reserve all the best ones by 8am.

I have to sit in the shade as I hate being in the sun, so we had to join in with the bagging! We didn’t have a butler suite, but we were up at 6am every day to go to the gym anyway, so moseying down to our pool or beach spot of choice on our way was actually no issue. We’d just leave our beach bags there and return after breakfast.

It’s something I never thought I would do, but it was all very casual and civilised.

They have a policy of removing any belongings left on beds to a safe place if they’re not in use by 10am. Seems reasonable.

cakeorwine · 14/07/2022 20:59

I am sure people remember this.

Union Jack, Dambusters and Germans being beaten to the sunbeds. Wouldn't be made nowadays..

Bonjovispjs · 14/07/2022 21:01

This has been going on since the beginning of time, but some hotels are apparently putting a stop to it by the staff going round and removing everything from loungers where the people aren't there, about time too.

Bestseasonever · 14/07/2022 21:02

I haven’t just realised. Saw the article and can’t believe it still happens. Maybe I’ve been lucky not to see this when I’m on holiday. Either that or staff just remove them. It made me chuckle

I was at a hotel in Greece that employed a man to prevent people reserving sunbeds before 9am. If you weren’t at your sunbed he removed your towels.

RishiRich · 14/07/2022 21:06

I'm going on holiday in a couple of weeks and paying $50 a day for a reserved cabana in the shade. Worth every penny to avoid the stress IMO.

Dinoteeth · 14/07/2022 21:08

Someone mentioned a hotel in here that periodically during the day played a daft tune, told everyone to get out the pool and removed the towels from the unoccupied beds.

I want to know which hotel.

girlfriend44 · 14/07/2022 21:09

I haven't seen this for a while. I remember though once seeing towels in the pool abroad. Some irate people had thrown them in.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 14/07/2022 21:10

It’s not a new thing but it does seem more extreme and earlier. Lots of videos on you tube/tik tok of people running and saving multiple beds etc.

luckily it’s not my kind of holiday!

JellyBellyNelly · 14/07/2022 21:10

I just saw it on the news and I felt sorry for people doing it. It looked really stressful and no way to start the day.

stratforduponavon · 14/07/2022 21:13

It makes we spit. Selfish buggers!

Bestseasonever · 14/07/2022 21:14

Yes very stressful. How can you “reserve”something that’s not even yours. Lol

Years ago my parents stayed at a place in Tenerife where two men carried sun loungers up the stairs to their second floor rooms after dinner. The competition was insane.

Twospaniels · 14/07/2022 21:17

This is why we no longer go to hotels. We get a villa with a private pool and you can do as you please. Most villas sleep 6 or 8 so not much difference in price .
of course you have to do your own thing for meals, but we would do that even if in a hotel anyway as we like to get out and about and try different restaurants

goinback · 14/07/2022 21:17

Hotel I am currently at in the Canaries has a big shelf unit behind the lifeguard and removes towels from any unoccupied sunbeds. Any arguments he just points to the fair use policy notice. This was also pointed out when checking in so must have been a big issue

IhateJan22 · 14/07/2022 21:20

I don’t understand this at all, surely people go out in the day whilst on holiday? Why the need to save a sun bed? Who wants to sit round the pool all day, everyday 🤷‍♀️

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 14/07/2022 21:22

The French camp site we were on pre covid blew whistles at 1pm and everyone out of the pool to go sit on their sunbeds. Any unoccupied beds with towels had their towels removed and beds freed up for bagging again by anyone. Excellent idea. Luckily one day DH was getting lunch for us all so we were able to keep his lounger for him.

Jsy7 · 14/07/2022 21:23

Silly isn’t it. People with kids are the worst. We must be right next to the kids pool every day and will get up at 5am to ensure we are!
