To ask someone to not leave their engine running at nursery pick up?

Parents queue up outside the nursery entrance to collect their DCs at home time. Today, once again, this parent parked their big SUV type thing on the double yellows outside nursery entrance and left the engine running (car empty) whilst they queued for 10 minutes to pick up their DC. There is a dedicated nursery car park around the corner with spaces free so it's not like there was nowhere else to park.

I politely suggest that this is not great for air quality in the nursery as the car is next to the open nursery windows for the room where our DC are based inside.

Parent is offended and gives me some spiel about how they have read studies about it being more environmentally friendly to leave the engine running.

I explain that I would rather not be breathing in the emissions while I queue and they reluctantly turn off the engine.

Was I being unreasonable?

Light a fag, blow the smoke in their face, big suv driving twat

What a numpty. Check if your council lets you report people parked on yellow lines. Ours does and sends out a man on moped straight away to ticket it. I've done that a few times when arseholes parked on the school zig zags. A couple of tickets and they stopped doing it

I always hope someone drives off with the car when someone leaves an empty car idle. No Insurance pay out. Actually just saying that you heard someone's car got stolen like that would probably be more likely to stop them idling than any environmental reason. Selfish twats like that only care about themselves.

It’ll almost certainly be remote cooling with everything locked. I can do this with my car via an app. I don’t though, because I’m not a twat.

Yeah that's definitely a good way to avoid air pollution outside a nursery and definitely a good idea for a pregnant woman.

Just reach in and turn it off.

Although some cars you can idle with the key out and doors locked. I had a Jag like that, you can start the car from anywhere using an app. Its for warming the car in winter and cooling in summer without having to get into the car to unlock and start the engine.
Its not legal to do it on a public road

I left my car running the other day while I did nursery pick up. Got a big car, too. I don’t normally but I chose to as I had my dog in the car and I absolutely was not going to leave him in a car with just the windows open. It was 32 degrees outside.

Ontomatopea · 15/07/2022 11:59

It's really stupid someone could pinch her car

JustDeserts · 15/07/2022 12:03

A former neighbour used to leave the engine running when opening the gate to their drive. The handbrake failed. SUV rolled forward crushing her and crashed into the house. A toddler was in the car.

Bellaboo01 · 15/07/2022 13:25

I havent read all the messages.

BUT, even though i agree with you, it isn't any of your business. You mentioned it to them which i respect but, then to let it worry you beyond that to think about telling the school and post it on here seems a bit ott.

I personally would think that isnt right but, i would personally report it to the school as they can approach it at a different angle as they are parking dangerously.

Whether they have an SUV is none of your business.

JustDeserts · 15/07/2022 13:47

@Bellaboo01 , of course it is OP's business. The car is parked illegally, and it is an offence to leave the engine running.
If the car rolled forward or if a child climbed in it could have awful consequences.

The Highway Code states: ‘You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road’.

Leaving a car unattended with the engine running on a double yellow line is potentially blocking emergency services vehicles.

All because the other parent is too lazy to park in the car park.

Some councils have active campaigns against leaving engines running. Ask your council about doing something across the borough and of course the nursery to remind parents not to do it anywhere near small children.
