YANBU - I'm thinking of keeping them off, it's a health risk going to school.
YABU - They'll be fine going to school.

Hotter in our home than at school anyway! Dreading it.

DappledThings · 14/07/2022 20:01

Nope. Their trip that day has been cancelled. They'll be fine inside and having short breaks outside with hat and cream. I trust them to nag them a bit more than normal about water too.

I've been told I can WFH instead of going in to the office but office has air con and I have lunch plans so will he worth the hot train I reckon.

GCHeretic · 14/07/2022 20:02

School will be no hotter than the house; they’ll both be going as usual.

Darbs76 · 14/07/2022 20:02

Mine are going to school. We have had to allow our staff to work at home if they wish, even though the office is much cooler (and they moaned all winter it was too cold and asked to work at home). Drives me mad. Mine will be going to school. They’ve cancelled sports day, they will manage a couple of days I’m sure

Siameasy · 14/07/2022 20:02

Nope. None of the predicted temperatures have come to pass here and we are in the SE. My DD isn’t bothered about the heat.

Choice4567 · 14/07/2022 20:06

Yeah school has air conditioning at DDs school so cooler there than at home

Cuck00soup · 14/07/2022 20:15

No.

OdeToSadDisco · 14/07/2022 20:18

The house is like a sauna. The DC tell me school is cooler. So they'll be going in regardless.

BigRedDuck · 14/07/2022 20:19

They will be absolutely fine going to school. Be hotter and more boring for them in the house anyway.

Crunchymum · 14/07/2022 20:19

My 3 will be going to school (London). I can't do anything more for them than school can. I'll also be working myself. I am totally WFH now.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/07/2022 20:20

Do you have a/c in your house?

Crunchymum · 14/07/2022 20:20

And where us being predicted 40c? 😮

Shoopitypoop · 14/07/2022 20:22

My kids are only in two days next week. I am fully expecting half of the staff to pull a sicky and the kids needing to be sent home TBH.

But if they're open, they'll go in.

Shoopitypoop · 14/07/2022 20:23

Crunchymum · 14/07/2022 20:20

And where us being predicted 40c? 😮

They've predicted 37 for us in NE Wales.

Bring on the thunderstorms!

Abraxan · 14/07/2022 20:26

My school is an old Victorian building but with false ceilings added, only small windows that can be opened and other windows which are large but don't open - some rooms are like a greenhouse due to a wall of glass. The yard is concrete with little shade.

It's definitely much warmer than my house in the classrooms.

We are planning on a fairly relaxed couple of days (our forcast is 36/37) with staggered breaks. We are reducing the lunch break so children aren't out for an hour but will have two shorter breaks with indoor time between. We are planning to cancel the school assemblies as the hall is small and it's normally very overcrowded as it is, so not going to work in that heat.

Luckily is the last half week before summer so we can justify a very relaxed day or two.

SE13Mummy · 14/07/2022 21:03

Mine are teenagers but will be going to school for their final two days of term.

My own school will struggle on until Thursday so I'll be in my south-facing classroom with the sun blazing in. No air con, no fan, no ventilation from anywhere in fact because the doors have to remain shut. I teach in a primary PRU so our classes are small but so are the rooms and it's a fairly physical job. If parents choose not to send them in, I wouldn't blame them but I'd be sorry if the Y6s weren't in for their - very short - goodbye shindig.

Parts of London are predicted to be 39 on the BBC weather forecast. Some reports are saying it may reach 40.

When I lived in a tropical country as a child we went home at lunchtime if the temperature hit 40c. It was deeply uncomfortable.

Quornflakegirl · 14/07/2022 21:13

They’ll be going in. School has air conditioning and they can wear their own clothes. Lots of ice water, hats and sun cream. They’ll be fine.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/07/2022 21:18

Our work place is offering the following:
7am to 3.30pm work day for those both in the office and WFH.
Encouraging people to come into the office (air con, opening at 7am too). Lots of free cold drinks available.
People can work a half day if they want (and do the odd hour here and there to ‘make up the time’.

Fizbosshoes · 14/07/2022 21:32

Home and city of London (where I work) are both forecast 36/37° on Monday and Tuesday. I have DS in year 7 and DD has finished school (she's year 11) It hadn't crossed my mind to keep DS off school. Maybe I'm really mean?? They relax uniform rules when it's very hot (above about 25°) and DS is pretty good at drinking water.

I'm lucky that our trains have air con and so does my workplace. In fact at work we were slightly chilly with the air con and turned it off!

Rosebel · 14/07/2022 22:08

Mine will be going to school and youngest will be going to nursery. The nursery aren't letting them play outside at all Monday and Tuesday but they do have air con so probably cooler than being at home.

R1408 · 14/07/2022 22:12

I work in a school and it's been pretty hideous when the temps have been 28c - I'm going to keep my own kids off on Monday/Tuesday.

I think they'll be safer at home, it's hard for schools to monitor the health and wellbeing of large groups of kids and I'd rather keep them at home til the heat drops.

BelleMarionette · 14/07/2022 22:13

Yes, I have to work (not able to work from home) and home is no cooler than school!

I don't get all the hysteria about hot weather. Many countries have regular high temperatures, and they survive. Not all have widespread air con either.

Sunflowers2047 · 14/07/2022 22:14

Do you realise that kids in very hot countries go to school every day? Kids today are wrapped up in cotton wool.
