To be scared of being toothless over summer?

11Hawkins · 14/07/2022 16:14

First world problems here folks.

I'm 30 years old, I have a genetic disease that has ruined my teeth.
I have a upper denture, and in two weeks I'm having the rest of my teeth out (apart from 5 front on the bottom)
The problem is my dentist didn't reliese she's on hoilday and the denture lab is on hoilday so the timeframe for my dentures will be delayed and won't be ready in time! 😳

Meaning I have to go 7-8 weeks without any dentures as my current ones won't fit. I can't reschedule the extractions as I've waited 11 months to be sedated and if I push it back I'll be waiting another 10 months which I can't do as having bad teeth is making more unwell than I should be.

So I'm going to be toothless the whole of the summer holidays. 🥴
Has anyone else had this issue? How do you get over the anxiety of going out?
I'm not prepared to hide in the house all summer and make my DC miss out on summer but I'm so nervous and upset about the idea of it.

Honestly, I’d reschedule.

Is there a Tempory solution that the dentist could help with? I wouldn't be happy with being left without teeth for that long? Can you get some of the Tempory dentures / veneers in the meantime?

Cryingbutstilltrying · 14/07/2022 16:19

So will the top denture not fit still? Sorry it’s not entirely clear.
if you have the top denture and some teeth at the front on the bottom jaw will it be very obvious that others are missing?
I think I would be more concerned about being able to eat rather than anything else.
What holiday plans did you have that you’re concerned about?

cornishcrusader · 14/07/2022 16:20

Covid mask when you are out and about, so no one will know any different?

osprey24 · 14/07/2022 16:21

wear a mask? If questioned say you are extremely vunerable to covid.

DilemmaDelilah · 14/07/2022 16:25

My husband had partial dentures top and bottom and had all the rest of his teeth out a couple of months ago. He has the same holiday problem as you and can't be fitted for new dentures until September! He is able to wear his old top dentures although they don't fit very well, but his bottom dentures just fall out. He is very lucky in that his bottom teeth (when he has any) don't show - but he has a lot of problems eating. Would you be able to use your old dentures while you are waiting for your new ones? And how about wearing a mask in public - that is about the only good think that covid has done for us!

Yes, wear a mask whenever you don't want to explain.

Yes that's what I'd do.

FogoInn · 14/07/2022 16:35

Oh dear that sounds awful OP. Most dentists are acutely aware of this and will not remove teeth until the denture is ready in a planned procedure like this.
I'd speak to your dentist again as that is unacceptable

11Hawkins · 14/07/2022 16:39

I can have the existing denture added with teeth but due to the lab being holiday I will need to wait 3 weeks, but two of those weeks I'll be recovering. But it means being without teeth over my birthday as it's the day before I have them out! 😂😫

I will wear a mask that's a good idea, I cannot reschedule it's not an option. I've had 5 infections since I've been waiting last September and one put me in hospital on a iv antibotics I was really close to sepsis so I just need them out.

Honestly the thought is mortifying, I will be on calorie drinks and I'll be able to have things like mash potato, yogurts, weetabix, plain chocolate (thank god!!) so I can eat a bit.
Just was hoping I was not the only one whose been in this position.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband, does his top ones stay in okay with nothing to hold onto too? I have to have teeth added to mine as right at the front I will have a gap and it'll be to obvious.

I have a condition which makes my teeth quite weak and struggled with a front incisor tooth. Eventually had it removed and a cobalt chrome plate made, but when it was sore and uncomfortable I absolutely shoved on a face mask and went toothless 😂

Honestly, knowing the pain these things caused I'd get yourself online, find a bloody good mask that you love and embrace it.

Good luck x

DilemmaDelilah · 19/07/2022 22:09

@11Hawkins His top ones don't fit all that well and sometimes call out when he is eating, but he has some super duper extra strong waterproof blue that usually holds them in place provided he doesn't actually try to bite anything. Mushy food and cutting things up well before trying to eat them usually works though. He managed quite a few jaffa cakes today 😁

DilemmaDelilah · 19/07/2022 22:11

Bloomin autocorrect.... His top ones FALL out - they don't call out. Imagine 'help help he's trying to eat!'

Helen1233 · 19/07/2022 22:48

If you were my friend I wouldn't care less!

Mask is a great idea though if you want to hide it.

Piglet89 · 19/07/2022 22:56

Ah op no suggestions but I have had dental problems in the past and a couple of extractions. Bloody awful.

Big, big hand hold for you; hope you work it out and the wise ones of Mumsnet can help.

MillyMollyMardy · 20/07/2022 15:17

Can your dentist put a tissue conditioner (it's a temporary denture lining material) in your upper denture so it will fit whilst your gums heal? It won't replace the missing teeth but it will mean the plate is just about useable whilst you wait for the lab to reopen.

There are labs that are licenced to treat people directly that you could go to as a private option if you could afford it and felt you could cope with letting them take moulds and try the teeth in at the various stages.

If there is nothing they can do it's better to think positively that several weeks for healing will mean when you have the new denture it will be a much better fit.

11Hawkins · 20/07/2022 17:37

Just an update. The dentist is taking my dentures that I have already and adding teeth to it so I'll be without them for 6 days, (5 of them I'll be recovering at home anyway!) so I will have teeth. Grin
I won't have a bottom denture for a while, as we will start that mid august but it's not as noticeable as missing my front teeth so I can live with that. I won't be able to eat it'll be purely for show but again long as I can eat chocolate it's all good. I'm in a much much better place. Thank you for all the kind comments. X

Good luck hope it all goes well

MillyMollyMardy · 20/07/2022 17:45

That's a great update and you will find your lower plate will be a much better fit when it's made after your gums have had a chance to heal first as gums and the jaw really reshape in the first weeks.
