What is engaging your pelvic floor?

Jeunein · 14/07/2022 14:36

Instructor says to keep pelvic floor engaged throughout.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 14/07/2022 14:36

Do you mean as in, not weeing on the floor?

I expect you know far more about pilates than your instructor - why not point this out to her, next class? Do pop back & tell us how grateful she & your classmates are to reeive your wisdom.

Well why don't you as your Pilates instructor about it then rather than a bunch of randoms on the internet?

I can tell you that once you get past menopause, you'll end up pretty grateful for good control of those pelvic floor muscles.

Coughee · 14/07/2022 14:40

Are you possibly taking her too literally? Surely she means throughout each exercise not a solid hour of pelvic floor engagement..

Jeunein · 14/07/2022 14:43

I never said I know more about Pilates than a fully qualified instructor. But it does feel wrong to keep them continually engaged. They should relax, like other muscles. Maybe she's not qualified.

OP posts:
Jeunein · 14/07/2022 14:44

She tested me and said that I basically don't have a pelvic floor.

I don't think anyone can keep it engaged constantly I think like PP said it's to remind you to keep re engaging it which is a good think to work out and be reminded of I think it's understood that you would relax between sets but keep remembering to re engage it.

Maybe you should try engaging it once in a while then.

alphapie · 14/07/2022 14:45

Engaging your pelvic floor means tightening and loosening the muscles..

Not just holding for an hour

You're ignorance here is the issue

Edwardoo · 14/07/2022 14:46

how did she test you lol?

Oh right.

She said keep it engaged throughout (the session).

Your explanation makes sense.

Jeunein · 14/07/2022 14:47

Edwardoo · 14/07/2022 14:46

how did she test you lol?

They put their hands on the lower part of your tummy area and apparently they can feel if your pelvic floor is engaged.

You should ask someone physiotherapy professional, but I think engaging pelvic floor for 1 hour straight is too much. There was NHS app with exercises for it and some women wrote opinions in app store that it doing these these exercises unsupervised for prolonged periods of time caused them even more trouble.

Thanks for the advice. It was starting to feel 'wrong', like an over-worked muscle. No pain but just a sense of doing damage.

Did you research the instructor/class before you started? Have you asked them what their background and qualifications are?
