Sick days for planned op?

DH has a medical thing and he has an op scheduled on Saturday to fix it. It’s being done open rather than keyhole due to previous surgeries. We’re v fortunate to have private healthcare so the wait has only been a few weeks since his initial trip to the doctors. But it needs to be seen to.

DH is questioning if he should get sick time as it’s a planned procedure? I mean I understand in some circumstances, like if it was cosmetic or he’d hurt himself doing something daft (which he has in the past but that’s another story). But he couldn’t have avoided it! Surgeon has said his medical history means he’s predisposed to this type of medical thing. It is giving him some discomfort and he’s very anxious in general and this is adding to it, so getting it seen to ASAP is important.

I think he will need some time off, but he’s determined to push through (WFH at desk based job) as he’s working his notice and has taken all his accrued leave at the end of his employment to make his end date sooner - it was a long notice period. I think it doesn’t matter that he has a holiday balance or that he’s leaving. If he’s sick and unable to work then he takes sick time.

I might be clouded as the company haven’t been particularly good to him. He’s pulled in loads of clients and work, works long hours and the company setup is poor/chaotic and they won’t properly resource, hence he’s off to pastures new.

AIBU?

YABU - he should use holidays/push through
YANBU - he should take time off sick as needed.

Yes, of course he should be on sick leave afterwards. His surgeon will talk about when he can resume normal activities.

Health comes first, he needs time off to recover.

The hospital should give him a sick note for anything over the five days self cert if he asks them. Some might refer him to GP to get sick note though. Vast majority of surgeries are pre planned and not emergencies, not make them less important.

Yes he will need sick leave

Get the surgen to write a sick note.

I was off for 12 weeks once after a planned medical procedure.

If it’s not a procedure for cosmetic purposes then yes he should.

He's entitled to sick leave for that and the hospital can (and will|) write him a sick note for however long they think he should take to recover. He might not necessarily need the whole period, but he should have the option. I got signed off for a month after an operation a few years ago and I only actually took a week and then worked from home (was an operation on my leg, so once the pain reduced a bit I could easily sit and work at home with my foot elevated).

Thanks all. Should have said I’ve NC but I am about quite a bit, just don’t want this linked.

He’s had a chat with one of his colleagues today and she has reassured him. I just feel like he’ll recover quicker if he takes the time to rest and heal at the start!
