Medical trials

Would you consider taking part in a medical trial? What would the conditions be?

Have you taken part? What were the pro's and con's, anything you didn't consider?

Any other thoughts?

I was/am part of an existing trial for my current IVF pregnancy, they're trialing a new embryo grading system and my clinic is one of many in Europe taking part.

I'd take part in others if I was eligible.

DH took part in a sleep related trial a few years ago as was referred from the GP

I took part in a vaccine trial. Had two vaccinations, had to stay on a ward for observation and also have multiple nurse visits pre and post vaccinations for blood and other samples. Made a couple of grand. Put it toward a house deposit.

Made great money, did very little for it and met some interesting people and learned loads. Helped their research. Small risk of complications but I’m a medical professional and read the literature and was happy it was as safe as they could make it.

I was in the initial AZ covid vaccine trial. Lots of blood tests and medical questions on repeated visits to UCLH, weekly covid testing. It was a really interesting experience and it helped lift my spirits back when things were looking quite grim to feel that I was doing something helpful.

I turned out to be in the placebo group which was a blessing as it meant that I could just get jabbed and use the app like everyone, whereas I understand those in the vaccine group couldn't get their jabs registered on the system and so had to travel with a special letter re their vaccine status which all sounds like a faff (might have been fixed now).

Thanks, I have an appointment tomorrow to discuss it with them after passing the initial criteria. Its treatment for a condition I already have.

I'd do it if there was the likelihood of a significant benefit to me, either financially or healthwise.

A family member did a trial for a new MS treatment and I'm currently taking part in research to increase understanding of mental health problems in relation to another condition - thankfully in the control group. Neither of us were paid.

I work alongside medical research and would encourage as many people as possible to do it. If you're testing a treatment or vaccine it will have been very thoroughly tested before it gets to a human whilst other bits of research could be as simple as filling in a couple of questionnaires online or giving a small blood / saliva sample but could help us understand conditions and offer treatments sooner.

Pitch over. Sorry!

I would always take part if I could , disclaimer - I work in medical research 🧐
