To ask my NDNs to stop parking their crappy cars outside my house?

Of course there is a diagram.

TLDR: neighbours I don't really know are taking up all the on-street parking with abandoned (but usually taxed) cars, their own cars and work vehicles. WIBU to ask them to cut it out?

Long version:
Background info: I live on a fairly busy road. Both sides are terraced. The houses on the other side of the road all have drives. Their side of the road has double yellow lines. The houses on my side can't have drives as we're up a steep verge. Some people have a parking space around the back of their houses, reached via unpaved access roads. There's also on-street parking on my side of the road. Parking is a problem as there isn't enough room for everyone and visitors.

One house over the road is an extended family with several adults. They have a car each, plus 2 work vans and a fecking minibus. They have 3 parking spaces on their property but that's not enough for all their vehicles. When there isn't enough on-street parking, they park full on the pavement on their side of the road. It's usually overnight. Sometimes they get ticketed but that doesn't seem to bother them.

So far, so annoying. We've both lived here for over 10 years. They're perfectly nice and we wave but we don't have a chat because we live either side of a busy road.

Last year, they started buying crap, broken down cars with bits missing and parking them on the road. They then leave them there for weeks. I didn't realise it was them at first and reported all the cars as abandoned. Some of them were taxed, some not. Some got towed away. Some disappeared and were replaced by new crap cars.

Now they're taking up over half the parking spots on our stretch of the road. I've checked and they're all taxes but just sitting there, slowly rusting.

WIBU to ask them what they're doing with all these cars and tell them it's causing a problem for visitors?

I sympathise but guy can't dictate who parks on a public road. If they're untaxed, shop them.

PuppyMonkey · 14/07/2022 17:28

I love it when people on MN fail to see any problem with a situation like this.

Yeah one family taking up all available spaces on a road that is tight for spaces with their clapped out vehicles is actually not a problem, what can you possibly be thinking OP? It happens all the time in every single MNers’ street. And they all just sigh and say “oh this isn’t a problem at all, I will give my neighbour a big box of chocolates to say thank you.”

Coming here seeing issues where there just aren’t any because the law says it’s ok, so you must never be able to have visitors or a delivery ever.

This diagram is the benchmark by which all other MN diagrams must now be judged BTW.

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 14/07/2022 17:36

Excellent diagram.

Keep reporting them as abandoned vehicles. See if you can get other neighbours to report them as well.

GodspeedJune · 14/07/2022 17:39

They don’t just need to be taxed, they need MOT and insurance too. You can check this online.

MugginsOverEre · 14/07/2022 17:47

You do need to be taxed to park on the road. If it isn't taxed then it needs to have a SORN declaration. (Statutory off road notification) and as the name says, it needs to be off road. In a garage, on a drive, on a garden, private land or whatever. Just off the road.

MugginsOverEre · 14/07/2022 17:48

Oops, apologies. I misread. Though your put it doesn't need to be taxed.

shrugitoffonemoretime · 14/07/2022 17:55

Aren't they technically running a business if they are doing Up cars to sell and are basically usually the public highway as a used car lot - pretty sure I saw a programme once where that was illegal/ council got involved and they were issued a notice to stop

RishiRich · 14/07/2022 18:34

HAHAAAAA, GOTTEM!

Not insured. Re. Por. Ted.

Good on ya! Go get em.

DaSilvaP · 14/07/2022 22:42

If the car is parked on a public road then it must be MoT'd, insured and taxed at all times
Anyone can check online road tax and MOT status of any vehicle
vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/
If the car is seriously damaged / had an accident I very much doubt the MOT is still valid even if it shows online as valid.
Don't waste your time talking to them. They are well aware they are hogging a lot of parking space and obviously don't care. Just keep reporting any illegal vehicle and complaining.

Best diagram I’ve ever seen on here!

I have an annoying parking neighbour too, he has 2 work vans and his car aswell as all his work trailers etc stored in the garden, he also has a huge metal shed in the garden for all his work tools… I presume, his garden is basically his work yard.

he parks his van right up to our drive meaning getting in and out is a nightmare, doesn’t matter how many times I’ve had to chap the door and ask him to move it,

we have 2 cars and a work van too however we always park in designated parking spots rather than abandoning them wherever.

GrinAndVomit · 14/07/2022 22:54

Nothing you can do because they legally can park on the road as many cars as they want.
Saying that, it’s very selfish and very annoying.

I have no advice but I really like how you draw cars.

I draw significantly less well than the average 5yo so thankyou!

Even if PP think this entitled behaviour is perfectly acceptable, parking on the pavement is definitely not. It's a danger to pedestrians, especially those with buggies, wheelchairs, partially sighted etc. call the council parking line each time they do that, OP. they'll be round like the clappers to slap tickets on them. It's free money to the council.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 15/07/2022 01:08

Best MN diagram ever

RishiRich · 18/07/2022 19:27

Minor update. They've added an untaxed, uninsured minibus with no MOT to their road collection so I reported it to the police via the 101 webchat. Yay. I have them the reg plate of the other uninsured one and told them it's been going on for a long time. Hopefully they'll do something with it.

You really have got too much time on your hands.

springhassprung22 · 18/07/2022 19:42

YANBU to be annoyed that would get on my nerves! My neighbours (semi detached) don’t have a drive and between them have FOUR vehicles, including one that’s almost never driven, one that’s definitely never driven and I’m pretty sure isn’t road worthy, and a pick up truck that’s the size of two vehicles.

Like my neighbours, yours aren’t technically doing anything wrong at all so I don’t think I’d have the gall to say anything. But very annoying!

I'm stuck at home with covid so yes, I do.

StoneofDestiny · 18/07/2022 19:54

Much sympathy - I'd not like to live in a street with broken and smashed up cars on it. Must be like living in a scrap yard! Yes, it's a public road, but caring about your environment is perfectly reasonable.
good luck OP

YesitsBess · 18/07/2022 20:00

I LOVE the diagram! Even the houses look sad and annoyed. 11/10

FreyaStorm · 19/07/2022 14:56

Slough?

PattyMelt · 19/07/2022 15:20

I reported one that hd been on the road so long grass was growing out of the tyres to DVLA and while I was at it I reported one that was always parked in the exact same spot and leaking on the road gradually eating away at the road. They drove the whole street mad. Both were gone within 2 weeks, taken away on the same day.

camelfinger · 19/07/2022 15:25

Not much to add, but kudos for the diagram.
We used to have a similar problem, but now we have restricted parking so all the rust buckets have been dumped off near someone else’s house.
For the worst offenders we would report them the second they became untaxed/MOTd.

moistmingemist · 19/07/2022 15:27

Sounds like they're running a business buying and selling second hand cars. Contact council and HMRC.
