to want to replace my brand new car seat already?

My car was parked on the side of the road today when some w*nker drove into it and drove off without leaving a note etc. There is some damage to the front bumper, but I am not sure how hard the impact was as I wasn't there. Problem is, my brand new infant car seat was in the back seat (I am due on Sunday so it is there in preparation; never been used). AIBU to want to replace it (insurance may cover it, not sure); it seems such a waste but I don't want to take the risk. (it was on the complete opposite side of the car to the impact btw)

Also, any ideas on what I do with it if I do replace it - do I just bin it? Seems awfully wasteful

why do you need to replace it?

it wasn't on the side of the impact, it hasn't been damaged in anyway has it?

Alambil · 17/01/2008 14:40

how much is "some damage" ? Is it completely crumpled or just scraped/paint gone?

I would use the seat still but then I still use my high back booster (well - DS's!) after my sister gave us a bump up the back (hardly any impact lol - she didn't stop fast enough when parking lol lol)

contact the manufacturers to ask them their advice for one, maybe contact, i dunno, which? or some other independednt safety organisation to ask them.

you need reassurance to know its safe now youve thought about it.

NappiesGalore · 17/01/2008 14:42

but my instinct says it will be perfectly safe tbh

The bumper has partly come away at the side, car is driveable but definately needs fixing.

Everything I have seen about car seats says to replace them if the car is in an accident as you can't see whether it is damaged or not, and I would think it is better to be safe than sorry. DP doesn't seem to think it as important tho, hence my question.

what?

(considers explaining what a bumper actually is)

if there is no damage to actual car then don't worry about car seat

honestly

OK, thanks all, maybe I am being a bit paranoid. I will see what the garage says about the damage (and whether the insurance will pay!) and take it from there - guess I just needed a bit of perspective; as soon as I saw it I just burst into tears (pg hormones in overdrive!!!)

Contact the seat manufacturers and check the manual that came with the seat.

By the sound of it, you'll be fine, but being a Child safety campaigner, i always think its better to check first than assume.

If the manufacturer does say it needs replacing, ask them to send you a letter confirming that is their policy so you can send it on to your insurance if you make a claim.

The seat was't in use, so no risk of it being damaged by having to resist the impact or seat belt stretched , the car suspension/bumper will have taken the impact
