To ask how to spend a hot day in La Rochelle....

Just that really. We need to leave île de re and be sure of inbound connection to Paris but there’s no left luggage at Gare Ville and there’s a heatwave. Kids both teenagers.

Dans la piscine! That's after you've asked 'ou est la piscine?' to find it (another one here who did French at school in the 80's).

katscamel · 13/07/2022 15:47

If anyone happens to still have a copy can you look up what there is to do on hot day... apart from go to the pool, drink lemonade and have an ice-cream ..... 😄

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 13/07/2022 15:49

If it is ridiculously boiling like it was when we went the aquarium has air con!

MangosteenSoda · 13/07/2022 15:54

I’d love to help OP, but sadly we used Arc en Ciel at my school and thus I can only advise about trips to Abidjan in Ivory Coast. Bon chance.

concernedrepurplehouse · 13/07/2022 16:06

Ah, cest la vie….

I have used the phrase “Les piquesd’insectes” this week in an actual pharmacy!

Try the submarine base, it'll be actually cold inside!

10HailMarys · 13/07/2022 17:07

As another Tricolore-educated child of the 80s/90s, I immediately muttered 'Un aller-retour pour La Rochelle, s'il vous plait' upon seeing this thread.

gobbynorthernbird · 13/07/2022 17:55

Another vote for the aquarium. And Cafe de la Paix is fabulous.

Spooce · 13/07/2022 18:53

This has had me in fits of laughter remembering GCSE French and the depliant sur La Rochelle we all had to ask for! An old school friend just shared this which has also had me howling

Tillsforthrills · 13/07/2022 19:07

I’ve been looking at La Roche, Ile de Aix etc and I think there’s some good day trips from there you could look up.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/07/2022 19:08

Was going to mention tricolour too! It was the same in the 90s

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/07/2022 19:09

Which was much less problematic than the fact they didn’t replace the German books between those decades. Or the Geography books.

Hope you’ve found something to do OP

Well had you studied French in the 80s and not doodled all over the coursebook you'd know what was cool n happening in La Rochelle.

For those who didn't study French it was where the coursebook was set 😁

Was just going to reply ‘sur la plage’ for that very reason 😂

risefromyourgrave · 13/07/2022 19:12

I had the most delicious pizza in La Rochelle about 10 years ago. Nothing has ever come close.

feelingprettylight · 13/07/2022 22:03

@Strugglingtodomybest in a little (air conditioned) hut at Le Grainetiere campsite.

Plan to hire bikes and go everywhere.

🤷🏼‍♀️

@Yodaisawally "Grand Depart or Grand Retour" what are these, may I ask? Something about your de France?

concernedrepurplehouse · 15/07/2022 07:25

Lovely.
we have ad to do early and late rides and had a couple of air -con siestas but it’s still wonderful to be here.

Do not travel on the Grand Depart or Grand Retour. You will sit in traffic forever

Oh God. We once went to D’Oleron in the Grand Depart. It was horrific.

NancyJoan · 15/07/2022 07:33

The Famille DuPont would probably suggest an air conditioned cinema. There is a huge Decathalon store there too, which we always enjoy.

concernedrepurplehouse · 16/07/2022 19:24

Just to confirm, the paving around the harbour is indeed a dreadful heat trap! It was cool in the park though.
