to ask if you shop weekly or monthly?

I'm working on a book which I hope will help people deal with the cost of living crisis. It's kind of a cookbook but a bit more than that, focusing around cost and time-effective, easy cooking that is nutritious. A holistic approach for busy working families with a win/win/win/win ethos - cheap food, nutritious food, tasty food, quick food.

I'm sorting my recipes into weeks now and wondered when costing up, if I should use weekly or monthly.

So if you are a family with children (doesn't matter how many) How often is your big food shop?

IABU - I do a big monthly shop.
IANBU - I do a weekly shop

When we need to! I tend to do an Ocado order every 10 days or so for non-perishable stuff and cleaning products/loo roll/dog food and then just pick up what we fancy on a more or less daily basis. I’m not saying this is the cheapest way though - I don’t budget and don’t know how much I spend. Definitely waste less food this way though.

A weekly / fortnightly for tins , cleaning products , etc and then every other day for eats and fresh . I do every other day so I know what I fancy to eat . Too many times I've done the big grocery shop and chucked half away or into the dogs because I don't fancy what I bought

Since the pandemic I have tried to shop weekly although I often pop in towards the end of the week for milk/ bread.
When we lived in a rural location I would supermarket shop every 3/4 weeks and try he go to farm shop/ butcher/ fish van /baker as and when; I was on mat leave then and had plenty of time on my hands.

blebbleb · 13/07/2022 14:49

Almost daily. Pick up lots of bits on my lunch break

gogohmm · 13/07/2022 14:51

2-3 times a week. Never have done a big shop. Added advantage you can maximise yellow stickered items. I tried weekly for a bit but it doesn't suit my style of cooking, fresh stuff goes off

Comefromaway · 13/07/2022 14:53

Weekly. I don't have the freezer space for monthly and fresh stuff would go off.

EllenWaiteourkid · 13/07/2022 14:58

Before lockdown I shopped daily, then I was CEV and Tesco emailed and said we have your back (as opposed to JS with whom I had been shopping for 32 years, I am still waiting for a vulnerable slot Grin)

Any hooo I digress, I ended up doing on line with Tesco and it is saving us quite a bit.

DrunkenKoala · 13/07/2022 16:58

I weekly shop and top up towards the end of the week as fresh stuff goes off. Some items I buy each week and other items (mainly toiletries and household) I buy the big packs and replace on my weekly order when I need to.

HannahSternDefoe · 13/07/2022 17:11

We do a fairly big shop once a week and a couple of "fresh" shops for bread, fruit and veg in between.
Fresh veg/salad doesn't "keep" for more than 24-48hrs before it's off anymore - Tesco and Morrisons have been particularly poor in the last week or 2.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 13/07/2022 18:25

Weekly here, with the odd top up. I buy things again as I use them up, but try to keep a few of the long life stuff we use a lot, so in each weekly shop I'll be getting fresh stuff as well as stocking up whichever items have run out in my backup larder.
I find this easier to manage, money wise, as I never have a hugely expensive shop, the costs as largely similar week on week.

Serendipity72 · 13/07/2022 18:27

Once a fortnight for me then the local shop for milk/bread/fruit top ups.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 13/07/2022 18:28

Weekly. We don't have the storage space for 3-4 weeks worth of food - our kitchen barely holds a weeks' worth of food Grin

The only things I buy in bulk are pet food and cat litter as it's significantly cheaper to buy in bulk and it can just be bunged in the shed until it's needed.

Scottishskifun · 13/07/2022 18:31

I do in between the two!
Generally shop every 12ish day sometimes can get 14 days but we get a milk delivery and will get top up of bread.

I've found pushing it a bit further saves money and I actually use everything up rather then just buy more on top

alphapie · 13/07/2022 18:31

Who the fuck can buy a whole months worth of food for a family and store it in a normal home!?

Weekly of course

FT123456 · 13/07/2022 18:31

Weekly... but I also do end up going mid weeks as well 😅

Oblomov22 · 13/07/2022 18:32

Weekly plus top ups every few days. Fresh milk, bread, fruit, vegetables. Everything only lasts a few days.

JustCrackinOnPal · 13/07/2022 18:35

Buy all meat monthly from the butchers/farm shop.

Weekly shop for everything else

Crikeyalmighty · 13/07/2022 18:38

Weekly , with bits of top ups in the week

JenniferWooley · 13/07/2022 18:56

I do a monthly shop the weekend after pay day for long life/store cupboard stuff then do a weekly shop for fresh fruit/veg/salad. I do a monthly meat order from the butcher at my mums who will package it up into portions so I can just freeze it & use what I need.

Bread & milk are bought as & when required - sometimes we use loads & other times I'm throwing out full loafs/pints.

I hate meal planning but it's a necessity due to time constraints, with no small children & DD1(20) being out most nights or having eaten before I get home I'd just order Chinese most nights if I don't have a meal plan Blush

Goldenbear · 13/07/2022 19:17

I shop pretty much daily as I'm unsure whether we are going to eat out at the weekend..

Goldenbear · 13/07/2022 19:22

Plus I have a 15 year old that inhales food, extra if his friends visit and inhale the food with him, it literally does not last longer than 2 days even if I hide it.

Goldenbear · 13/07/2022 19:26

A book that provided top tips for snacks for teenagers that need snacks within budget would be interesting I think often this is really about budget food for a young family lifestyle where the kids go to bed at 7 and literally don't eat until the morning. Easy to budget then, these are the challenging years with food budget!

RandomUsernameHere · 13/07/2022 19:38

Weekly

chubbachub · 13/07/2022 19:40

Weekly.

With a monthly shop, people still have to go to the shop at least weekly for things anyway. I dont see the point.

SzechuanSally · 13/07/2022 19:40

Daily. I waste money if I shop in advance as I never want what I've bought and things like fresh veg go off so quickly. Daily means I only buy what I need. I also really enjoy it! Love a supermarket browse.
