Paddling pools for kids

Ok so I’m a bit dim especially when it comes to working out measurements, so please help šŸ˜„

I usually put a pool out for my dc on our balcony as we have no garden, the one we’ve had for years got caught on a bike and ripped in the winter, so I got them a new one thinking it was the same size and clearly it is too big.
Ive had a look online and seen a round one, but as I’ve explained I’m not very good with knowing sizes.
I don’t have a tape measure so wondering if any of you smart mumsnetters would know just by looking if it will fit before I go and buy it.

The 3 pictures are of the pool I have now and I was going to get a 1.83m round pool from eurocar parts.

thank you

1.83m is about 6 foot. Can a man lie down across your balcony? That's your answer.

And buy a tape measure! They're hardly expensive and I don't really know how you can adult without one Confused

As it’s round it would be a man laying in a circle wouldn’t it not straight?

On a balcony? Filled with water.... is that safe weight wise?

How do you dispose of the water?

Imthedamnfoolwhoshothim · 13/07/2022 11:07

I am awful at measurements as well :D
You should see the monstrosity of a hose I've got when I could've done with one half it's size.

But I don't think that will fit.
I did see an amazing balcony sized paddling pool someone was recommending on Facebook I would literally Google balcony paddling pool and see what it brings up

MrszClaus · 13/07/2022 11:07

1.83m round would be the diameter if I'm thinking correctly? Your balcony looks too narrow for this, it would end up being super squished and misshapen imo!

PuttingDownRoots · 13/07/2022 11:08

The dimensions will be the diameter. So if that 1.75m pool was too big, the 1.85m pool won't fit.

You need a 5ft pool (1.52m) or even a 4ft pool. And probably quite shallow if its on a balcony.

vroom321 · 13/07/2022 11:08

It will need to be less that 1.75m I guess?

Yes it’s more than safe, very sturdy heavy set balconies and the water gets used for plants and the rest goes down the drain.

I would be concerned about the weight of the water on a balcony.

Also the one you have bought measures 1.75m across (the shorter measurement, from left to right in your first photo, and using the measurements printed on the box in your third photo). If that's too tight then the round one you're looking at is going to be tighter still, because you've said it's 1.83 across which is 8cm wider.

Yodaisawally · 13/07/2022 11:10

You need much smaller than the one you are looking at

Mosaic123 · 13/07/2022 11:10

Do you know how tall you are?

If you put your arms out, the distance between the longest fingers on your two hands is very similar to your height.

So if you can touch both sides of the short sides of the balcony at the same time then (if you are 5ft) the width of the balcony is 5ft.

If you can't touch both sides at the same time (and you are 5 foot) then it's wider than 5foot.

If you have a child's ruler you can probably measure the last bit.

To be honest that balcony doesn't look 6ft (1.83 meters) on the shorter measurement.

MissVantaBlack · 13/07/2022 11:10

Your current pool looks to be 1.75 metres wide and it only just fits, so I think a 1.83 metres pool would probably be too big.

However, what floor is your balcony on? If it's a ground floor balcony, a paddling pool is probably fine. But if it's first floor or above, I'd be very cautious about putting a large pool out there. Water is very heavy and the balcony may not be designed for such weight. You don't want it to collapse when your kids are in the pool!

vroom321 · 13/07/2022 11:12

You need a much smaller one. Try Googling paddling pools smaller than 1m

Booked · 13/07/2022 11:12

That would be really heavy for the balcony. I wouldn't. Something small to splash feet in or a sand and water table, yes.

Huge pool the size of the balcony? No

FlippityFlippityFlop · 13/07/2022 11:12

It's too big. As a previous poster said you will need a 4ft pool (not sure a 5ft would fit)

Aquilegia23 · 13/07/2022 11:13

I really wouldn't put a pool full of water on a balcony. You say it's sturdy but water is very heavy, it could be disastrous.

Hotinnit · 13/07/2022 11:13

Nah you need a smaller one. Don't worry about it kids will be happy with a tiny one if it fits.

Aquilegia23 · 13/07/2022 11:14

As someone else said, try a very small round one, for feet and legs only.

Hotinnit · 13/07/2022 11:14

Also that one looks really deep, might just be the photos. So it will be a right pain to get in and out of.

As I used to tell pupils, a normal house door is 2 metres, use that for your guesstimate, men vary widely! Next time you're in IKEA, liberate some paper tape measures, if they still provide them.

The whole length of the balcony is about 12ft I could fit two length ways.

I will look for a smaller one.

Also just to add the balcony is more than safe, we are first floor and it is filled and attached to the wall, not like a thin balcony.
