Do you buy the branded uniform items?

I am sick of the shitty quality of our branded uniform and am thinking of getting generic supermarket versions.

Does anyone else do this?

Can get it vastly cheaper from ASDA/Sainsbury’s/Tesco and the quality is a million times better.

Can the enforce branded stuff? It’s a primary school.

Our primary don’t mind if it’s branded or not, so I have always bought plain cardigans and sports gear from wherever I can that’s a reasonable price!
It's less hassle as well when there is only one shop which sells the logo stuff which only just started online sales.

TheCanyon · 12/07/2022 20:07

Do I fuck, apart from the high school hoodie as dd1 wanted one. Bought dd1 the branded primary cardigan in p1, £15 for utter shite quality as went all bobbly in a couple weeks. Never made the same mistake again. Stick to Sainsbury's for trousers/polos etc and next for jumpers/cardigans.

Merryoldgoat · 12/07/2022 20:09

It’s such a fucking racket - the jumpers are so poorly sized and the quality is hideous - £12.50 for a plastic jumper. Urgh.

Great - I’ll stick to my plan then.

I’ve literally just spent £263 on DD’s new uniform for secondary 😱
Official uniform is compulsory.

Narcheska · 12/07/2022 20:13

Our primary official jumpers and cardigans are compulsory but everything else is fine from supermarket

Metabigot · 12/07/2022 20:17

Just the jumpers/sweaters/ blazers/ties

Blazers alone are £32 a pop

I try to use the uniform exchange which is much cheaper

Cupcakegirl13 · 12/07/2022 20:18

Ours is good quality so I do buy the jumpers and polos , I buy three of each and they last for two academic years . I don’t feel like that’s bad value -£12 per jumper and £9 per polo.

SparkyBlue · 12/07/2022 20:19

Ours has a branded jumper with a school crest and a tracksuit that has the crest. Complete rip off they are shite quality and only one shop locally sells them so it's a saga to go there and wait in line to get them. Everything else I buy in M&S or tesco or wherever

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 12/07/2022 20:20

I buy the cardigans as they are really good quality and big sized, they use sweatshirt fabric so they are lovely and thick with pockets. The fleeces are really good too but DD has gone off the style and prefers the cardigans.

The rest of the uniform is plain black leggings and plain white T-shirts so really cheap and easy to find.

Grumpybutfunny · 12/07/2022 20:23

We do as although it's not compulsory everyone wears it

HobnobsChoice · 12/07/2022 20:23

My kids' school actively steers us away from the logo sweatshirt as they are ridiculously expensive and the school don't get any commission from it. I think the last head liked them but the head we have now realises that 15quid for one jumper is not in the reach of many parents.

SydneyCarton · 12/07/2022 20:24

Ties and a logo jumper when they first started, otherwise it’s been Sainsburys and M&S when it’s on sale. Our school does sell iron on logo badges though, so I buy the generic jumpers and PE hoodies and then stick a badge on.

Noodledoodledoo · 12/07/2022 20:27

Cardigans and jumpers - I appear to be lucky as they seem to last well with my children and don't get lost. Friends of my children seem to lose or destroy one a week! They are good condition, jumpers are good enough to hand down and I buy big!

PE kit is unbranded but we have a lovely uniform lady who sells stuff and she is the same price as anywhere else for PE. Do have branded hats - saves losing their nice one but not compulsory - just easier. There is a branded PE tracksuit which is a ridiculous price so didn't even consider it!

CrabbyCat · 12/07/2022 20:27

Doesn't it depend on whether the school will enforce it? I would happily buy non logo-ed stuff as the logo-ed stuff is overpriced and poor quality, but on asking my DC nobody else wears non-logoed. They have asked me not to get non-logoed bits as they know it's not what they are supposed to wear, and at age 5 and 8 rebelling is definitely not yet their thing.

Whereswoolysweater · 12/07/2022 20:32

Our brand polo shirts and sweater-material cardigans wash really well, so I buy them second hand for £1 & £2 each. The unbranded items I purchased in various supermarkets and M&S in comparison looked awful after a few washes and tumble drys, so I just buy them second hand now as they look much better. We can also buy skirts / dresses and trousers for £2 a pop.

I don’t think many buy from the PTA second hand, so I always have a vast selection to choose from!

Twizbe · 12/07/2022 20:35

I do because we have to HOWEVER our school's branded stuff is fantastic quality. My son's jumpers, tie, backpack etc all still look brand new. Everything branded is gender neutral so all of it can be worn by my daughter when she starts in a few years.

I think it's absolutely right to feedback to school that their branded stuff isn't good quality and they need to improve that if they want kids to wear it.

bcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyza · 12/07/2022 20:37

My son has 2 polo shirts and 2 jumpers and 5 zippy hoodies with the school logo on it. Everything else is from the supermarket unschool branded.

He has the school jacket too.

His school ask for the logo stuff for trips.

AlwaysLatte · 12/07/2022 20:39

We would definitely not be allowed to do that at our schools, but I agree with you. I think schools should always have their logo'ed items in things like ties and badges, to keep the cost down for those who are struggling.

AlwaysLatte · 12/07/2022 20:42

NB make the most of it if you can get away with it at your primary (we couldn't as they had to have the logo'ed kit). When ours went to secondary school the cost for the uniform was over £400 per child!

Hoolahulahoop · 12/07/2022 20:45

No logos in ours thank god.

pimlicoanna · 12/07/2022 20:48

Ours the logo stuff is compulsory. It horrible thick and bobbly

Merryoldgoat · 12/07/2022 20:51

I’m not sure what school will do but the government guidance from this year does say they shouldn’t go OTT with it.

My boys also have ASD so find scratchy fabrics tricky and are very messy sensory seekers so the stains don’t come out easily of the branded synthetic stuff either.

PatchworkElmer · 12/07/2022 20:52

We’ve got logos on sodding everything- jumpers, PE kit, ties. Only thing I can get from the supermarket are shirts and trousers/ skirts.

RosieRoww · 12/07/2022 20:52

Absolutely not apart from branded jumpers- everything else from Tesco and etc.
Only bought all branded clothes for P1 then few times my son came home with holes in his trousers as they were chalk drawing and playing outside, so we switched to the Tesco ones and sticks with it till now.

WhiteFire · 12/07/2022 20:56

Yes I do, most children at the school do, I get ours from myclothing which was Tesco school uniform so the items are Tesco so the quality is reasonable. It is not a standard colour, so harder to source anyway.

The secondary we don't need that much - blazer, tie, jumper, pe top which compared to other schools in the area is very little.
