Do I tell neighbour someone ran over their plants?

Hi all,

This might seem like a ridiculous thread, but never mind.

Late this afternoon, I was at a client’s house, and heard a couple opposite having a barney- a scary, chavvy pair who looked like it’d be advisable not to approach. Naturally, I pulled back the net curtains and had a good look (who could resist- not me!)

Anyway, after the woman shouted a string of abuse (he responded enthusiastically with even worse and misogynistic language), she revved her engine, and furiously executed the most terrifying u-turn across my client’s ‘side’ of the road up in their neighbour’s garden, scraping a low wall and running over a load of plants.

Neither she or the bloke came back to check out the damage but I saw it happen.

This woman was completely out of control and could have run over someone (I doubt she’d have stopped and wouldn’t have had time to do so). This is why I think I should say something.

Wtf do I do? Tbf, I don’t live here and only come for work (rarely) but it’d probably be obvious who reported it/grassed them up (the type of term they might use).

Also, this is not a naice estate- it’s full of motorbikes revving, boy racers, loud domestics etc and all the folk here don’t seem bothered by it (last week a couple were arguing and after she kicked him out and he was banging on the door, the locals were egging him on and chuckling away at the excitement).

I don’t think I would be supported or thanked by anyone for reporting and could make trouble for my client. And I’m probably on someone’s camera gawping out of the window (but then again, maybe the driver was too).

To tell neighbour who it was or not??

I don’t see how they could actually make them pay for any damage. Owner could say someone saw them, they could deny it and say they were mistaken.

It doesn’t sound like the type of people you’d (they’d) want to have an argument with so I’d probably just leave it tbh.

I'm guessing you didn't take photo of any of this happening.
If the owner asks you, you could tell them what you saw, but from what you say it sounds like this is the sort of thing that happens in this area.
Another time - don't move the curtains to look!

I’d stay well out of it.

Sadly I agree with you, but if I did this I’d expect a detective and constable to be thundering on my door within hours!

And no, no photo- am not that quick! I heard the screeching and dashed over to have a look, the revving started as I whipped back the curtain and then she was off in a blaze of exhaust fumes and tyre tracks with him shrieking after her. Classy little.

If I was the client I wouldn't want you pulling back the curtain and looking out of the window to watch street drama, if its the type of place I think your describing, I've lived somewhere similar years back and you can end up having your windows put out or worse for being a grass or for sticking your nose in where it isnt wanted, better to stay below the radar in my experience.

NellesVilla · 12/07/2022 20:59

True, @Whatthejackdawsaw , they were just the type to take it further, I imagine. Although (selfishly, possibly due to my anxiety) my first worry was that they’d attack my car or have a hard friend in the police force who’d track my home down through my car registration!

You don't seem to have much faith in the police around your way!
