WHY can't I have my post at a resonable time of day or even a consistent one? SO much of my life is spent waiting for cheques to be sent to me, often in a panic because if they don't arrive more direct debits etc will bounce and yet I can't ring up the people who should have sent them and shout because the POST HASN'T COME YET AND IT@S F LUNCTHIME!

maybe i take it too personally. dp doesn't do deliveries anymore though thank the lord. he's in charge of making sure customers who bulk send pay the correct postage and a huge number of businesses and the public underpay.

i could tell a million stories on here of what crap he has to deal with from the public. it's like an easy target.

maybe the op's postman is a f*ckwit. but the title says the rm is FULL of lazy fwits, which if your dp works for rm is sort of insulting and offensive.

'It is a shame that a few bad apples can spoil the barrel.'

how right that statement is.

Eviewin · 17/01/2008 18:03

Haven't worked at Royal Mail for years, but there is a lot of post that those posting it class as 'lost' or 'stolen', when there has been a mistake on the addressing. NOT saying that this is always the case, there are a lot of problems there, but the person posting will always think they have addressed it right. Wrong or incomplete addresses are a big problem, much larger than you'd think, and normally the staff try to get it to the right place.

sugarmatches · 17/01/2008 18:09

And ggirl, just FYI, it may not be the RM who have your parcel.

Parcels owing any kind of customs charges are often paid by Parcel Force, who then hold it hostage until you pay the fees and the lovely £15 service charge they add on. I only know because I have had quite a few things from overseas end up in PF's hands over the holidays. Parcel Force made quite a bit of money from me this year!

Customs do randemly check parcels. One of my parcels was opened by customs because it was a larger box and they did not believe it was within the free limit...even though it was xmas gifts.

I would certainly look into it if I were you.

mousemole · 17/01/2008 18:28

grrrr, I blame the chairman and the workers ! I cant believe it is just the casual workers who have stolen birthday money for my son ( yes great aunt is mad to have sent money), m and s vouchers and several credit cards. We used to get the post at 7.30 am and now it comes anytime between 11 and 4. Used to have a lovely regular postman now it is a new one every day. One even put a xmas card through the door, saying from 'your post lady Sue' as if I should know who she is !

I blame the management - aren't the problems with management and poor industrial relations well documented at the Royal Mail? Which in turn has alienated the workers.

Things in our area are bad. They keep leaving cards without knocking first and then when you go to the sorting office they tell you it's not back in the system yet. The staff on the desk are quite helpful but they don't really seem to know where things are.

They also closed our local sorting office which was nice and handy and easy to park and merged with one on an industrial est where you can't park but it's not that comfortable to walk around IYSWIM. I got a parking ticket out there once. Not much public transport near either so again elderly and vulnerable suffer.

Post turns up when they feel like it it seems to me. Anytime.

We have had more than our fair share of missing post this last year. But I don't blame the postman at all - I do blame the system and am sure that alot of the problems are caused by ineffective management at all levels. The beaurocracy(sp?) is ridiculous - examples given of cards saying wait x hours before contacting office then office closed illustrate this. The fact that Royal Mail only considers an item to be 'lost' until 15 working days have elapsed is bonkers - no chance of finding it then. Having said all that, our regular posties are fantastic and very helpful. One of them was extremely concerned about a missing parcel and when it finally turned up was almost jumping with joy on my doorstep. We make sure we treat our posties with respect ( ie not let the dog near the one who is terrified) and we get what I believe is the best these chaps cn do given the restraints IMPOSED on them.

madamez · 17/01/2008 20:43

If I say that the post service is full of f*wits I am happy to clarify that I include the senior management in that description.

good, this thread wore me out

wooga · 17/01/2008 21:31

Post gets there later because many workers had their shifts changed-to start later-and there was sod all they could do about it.

Along with having to start later, the system has been changed.

Old system example:
start shift 5.00am
collect and sort mail ready into bags
hand excess bags to vans to take out ready
leave sorting office
deliver the mail(putting up with people complaining that they have to sign for things because they were in bed, etc),
return to office
break
sort next lot of mail
2nd post
finish

New system example:
start shift at 7.00am
sort post that night shift used to before
they were got rid of
sort your post out ready and into bags
maybe get called back for more sorting
hand out bags to vans...
leave the sorting office
deliver the mail while putting up with comments on how late you are....
return to office
get sent on extra round because not enough staff to cover sickness(night shift used to do this if they wanted-early delivery)

Also, the delivery areas are being combined so the postie has more work and takes longer.

ChirpyGirl · 17/01/2008 21:49

I feel the need to defend my postman.
My post gets here around 1ish now but I regularly see my new postie on the streets from 9am (earliest I normally venture out!) he does most of the streets near me and is always cheerful and friendly, he always knocks if he has a slightly big envelope to save squashing it.

Previous posties have all been complete miserable gits but I now don't mind my post coming late as I love my postie!

Also Royal Mail has lost 3 parcels of mine sent to me with presents for my daughter when she was born, she is now 3 months old, I go to the sorting office and complain and they go and look but can't find it, and I find it so sad that they get really apologetic and look nervous, I doubt the person that lost it is the person I am talking to so am not going to shout at them, but on a number of occasions they have thanked me for not getting angry with them personally! How sad is it that you expect people to abuse you while you are doing your job?

fizzbuzz · 17/01/2008 22:32

My dss worked for Royal mail on year out.

He didn't have time to stop for dinner or a drink. The amount he had to deliver was unreal and would take him about 8 hours (and he was partime)

Still think it is complete crap though. Tried to complain about 3 missing parcels on RM ebsite. You can only complain about one missing item at a time.

They are living in cloud cukoo land. One misssing item!

ChirpyGirl · 17/01/2008 22:36

I find it hard to complain as I onyl have a card from December saying they couldn't deliver, nothing to match it to any parcels, which I have never seen, so can't describe!

The company and organisation is completely fecking useless, no arguments from me, but most of the staff are just normal people doing a shitty job.

galaxymummy · 17/01/2008 22:39

I have given up and ask for parcels now to be delivered to my work
and it works
got all xmas pressies from amazon on time

glassofwhite · 17/01/2008 22:55

I agrre with everything south as got to say,but then i would with dp being a postie! He used to start at 5am,sort mail, start delivering between 6.30 and 7am,go back to sorting office between 10.30 and 11am collect 2nd post and be home for dinner. RM then dropped the 2nd class post about 5yrs ago which ment they had more mail to take out the following morning. In oct they started work at 6.15am and dont go and deliver till 9am if they are lucky. When there is sick and hols dp gets offered 'walks' on o/time,which does explain the late mail in some cases. DP says there isnt many casuals now at his office but does agree they are a big cause for concern! My dp is a fab postie and loves his job. I agree that you cant lay all the blame with the chairmen but also that a minor few give the rest a v.bad name!

Joash · 19/01/2008 12:42

Our postman has just shoved not only our mail throug the door, but next doors mail and two piles from the next street up ... now tell me thats not incompetent!!

edam · 19/01/2008 12:46

Well, the bastards have just stolen or lost my sister's birthday present. Despite putting a note through the door saying it was at the sorting office. She went to pick it up and the sorting office said they'd never had it. Am furious with the incompetent, thieving little sods.

sugarmatches · 20/01/2008 02:37

I must admit, I got 10 letters this morning meant for the next street over...for 3 different addresses!!!

I don't really see how that can be management as the mistake was missed at sorting and delivery! But hey, at least I got post today, which is unusual for a Saturday.

Makes me wonder how often my mail goes astray.

BearMama · 24/01/2008 18:56

My DP thinks his mail gets opened - he recently got birthday cards and were sure they'd been tampered with. Also his mail can arrive by about 2.30 most days.

Over at mine, I get mail by noon usually and haven't (so far) had too many probs. On Xmas eve I queued for half an hour at the sorting office and everyone was very civilised. I told the people there I thought they were doing a good job and they appreciated that.

I have no doubt tho that there are a few lazy idiots who should never have been trusted with the job of handling people's personal mail.
