Washing rained on

breatheinskipthegym · 12/07/2022 17:07

Hung out 4 loads. Weather forecast said it would be glorious - it wasn’t and it rained! Now glorious again and it’s dried. AIBU to not re-wash and just put it away? I reckon it’s fine, but also have a weird niggling feeling about it.

I'd wash it again even though I know it illogical

Why? That’s bonkers.

There is a lot of bonkers behaviour relating to washing clothes on MN!

FindingANewLifePlan · 12/07/2022 18:03

I had a load of washing got rained on about 4 times a few weeks ago - just kept leaving it out to dry and then, what do you know, fucking heavens opened again Grin

I didn't think a great deal of it, other than a secret feeling that my child's uniform was clearly the cleanest of all the children in nursery the following week <smug>

dotty2 · 12/07/2022 18:09

I have a nagging feeling that you should wash washing that's been rained on (though I wouldn't actually do it). But I realise this is illogical and comes from my DM and the way she used to rally everyone in the house to dash into the garden to help bring the washing in, at the merest hint of rain. But we lived in a polluted northern city - which presumably had been even more polluted when she was young in the 1930s/40s - and then I think rain water really did make your clothes visibly dirty, with domestic and industrial coal smoke, etc. Maybe this lingering folk memory is why some people worry about this?

Notanotherwindow · 12/07/2022 18:10

I'd wash it again. Look at how dirty your windows get when it rains.

WitchWithoutChips · 12/07/2022 18:17

I have just spent a very refreshing fifteen minutes standing in the rain hanging out the washing. I leave for work at 7am and won’t manage it in the morning, and it’s going to be sunny all day tomorrow, so I’ll come home to clean dry washing.

The rain isn't making your windows dirty. It's the rain getting in contact with the dust and dirt on the windows that causes the issues. No way is washing out long enough to get enough dust in it to cause an issue.

OP rain water is soft water, think of it as a nice extra rinse

It's not the rain that's dirty.....

breatheinskipthegym · 12/07/2022 18:28

Glad the consensus is that I don’t need to wash again. I didn’t think I did, was just in one of those weird brain-fart type moments where you question whether you’re a being daft. I think I have similar memories to a PP of being corralled, as though there was a national emergency, to bring the washing in when it started spitting. Washing smells fine and I might even muster up the energy to put it allllll away tonight!

As long as it didn't get darked on OP you will be OK.

Damm you beat me to it 😂

breatheinskipthegym · 12/07/2022 18:45

Oh, well this changes things. It’s been out since yesterday.

Do you think a 90 degree wash will sort it all out, or should I bin the lot?!

Yes, you'll just have to put your machine on a self clean cycle if you have one to remove all the dark residue

anybloodyname · 12/07/2022 18:47

Don't be silly OP .. just rinse it in an economy 30 degrees if it's bothering you , it's fine

CottonSock · 12/07/2022 18:48

Do you know where washing machine water comes from?

TuftyMarmoset · 12/07/2022 18:49

I’m a slattern by MN standards but I would rewash. I do live in a very urban area though so I know the rain is full of pollution.

BlibBlabBlob · 12/07/2022 19:29

Goodness no, no rewashing required.

Unlike my duvet cover, which dried beautifully in the sun the other day but then got utterly shat on by a passing bird. So delightful. That got rewashed, on a long cycle at 60 degrees. 💩

phishy · 12/07/2022 19:35

Oh these would make me fret. I don’t like clothes getting rained in. We never leave it to chance.

Fabboush · 12/07/2022 19:36

It's just water on clean washing. Leaving fabric out in rain actually helps to eliminate odours.

Best just burn the lot, better safe than sorry 🔥

I hate to break it to you, but it's your windows that are filthy, not the rain!

Sparklybutold · 12/07/2022 19:58

I love the smell of rain on clothes! I would definitely not rewash.

AlwaysLatte · 12/07/2022 20:20

It will be fine but if you're that bothered about it give it a quick hose down and it'll dry in no time.

AlwaysLatte · 12/07/2022 20:22

I wouldn't leave it out for more than a day though, I'd be worried about the sun bleaching things.

Not if it's a slight shower but proper rain
