Afternoon.

Little bit of background. Went for interview back in March. Got the job. Salary 6k more than similar jobs in local geographical area.

Started the job. First week fine. Then gradually being asked to take on more and more responsibility. All good so far.

Then it emerges a colleague going on maternity leave isn't as good at her job as she thinks she is. Lots of unfinished projects with deadlines that fall a couple of days after she is due to leave. When I say lots I mean paper work that has been on her desk for months with no action.

I work on these and meet the deadlines. No appreciation from the boss.

The boss is not a people person at all. He has no manners, no time for talking over any issues you may have with the role, he just expects it done yesterday with no arguments. Absolutely no support at all other than to be told that it's due soon so pull your finger out. A proper egotistical bully.

This is why the pay is so good...to entice people in!

He's very money driven and doesn't care for the well being or mental health of his employees.

You are allowed an opinion and then told you are wrong and his is the only way that it's being done. On anything - from what the weather is going to be doing to what role a woman plays in life (his mantra is the age old wife stands for washing, ironing, fucking, eating etc) so you can imagine what kind of 'man' he is.

This morning it came to a head when a really important file that's required by a customer for insurance purposes was discovered to have not been updated for over 18 months and it's needed for tomorrow!

Apparently it's my fault for not keeping it up to date (I'm not even aware of its existence until today never mind me only being in the role for just over 3 months!) and if I don't do it by the end of today then he will be having words and I will be on a warning! This file is over 809 pages all hand written by the lads on site and needs typing up and putting into some sort of logical order. I mean I'm a quick typist but fuck me that's going to be near on impossible in the timescale allowed.

On top of this the boss is demanding I source products for a new job, create purchase orders, place orders, make his coffee (it's a woman's job apparently 😳) and do all the general day to day admin.

With that, I gathered up my things, loaded my bags and told him I quit! Walked out with no notice.

Now I'm without a job (I have savings to see me through) but I still have my morals and my self- worth.

Do you think I was unreasonable to quit immediately given the circumstances?

TIA.

YANBU.

He sounds like an arse.

CheshireCats · 12/07/2022 15:25

Good for you! Xx

10HailMarys · 12/07/2022 15:28

Absolutely YANBU! If you have savings to see you through until you find something else, you have done the right thing.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 12/07/2022 15:35

Normally Im a fan of give notice and do everything by the book but in this case yanbu. Well done for not putting up with shit.

Aquamarine1029 · 12/07/2022 15:57

Why didn't you file a complaint against him? Where is his boss?

ThreeLittleDots · 12/07/2022 16:04

Morally, not at all wrong and good for you. Contract-wise, I hope there isn't a clause that says you have to cover any expenses incurred by leaving with no notice.

Clarinet1 · 12/07/2022 16:10

YWNBU at all! Let him make his own coffee and wipe his own backside for a change!

Rainbowbaby13 · 12/07/2022 16:13

Good for you 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

He is the boss! The director! Small office of 5 but 50+ employees out on the road. No HR department only the accountant/dogsbody who has been loyal for 7 years and does everything for him even on her day off!

In that case, I would have walked, too. I'm confident you aren't the first.

fghj149 · 12/07/2022 16:23

I was in a similar situation to you years ago. No training, just tasked with 200 things to do in a matter of days after starting and horrible boss. I walked after two weeks it was hell. You have done the right thing 100% 👍👍👍

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 12/07/2022 16:42

Nah, life's too short. Also, IME complaining further up the management chain doesn't work either. They probably know he's an arse, but don't want to deal with it.

Essexgalttc · 12/07/2022 16:48

Wow! Well done you!!

pogostickplastique · 12/07/2022 16:50

I was just going to suggest I'm sure there's a program you can scan it in and it'll turn it to text but that's irrelevant as you've quit

Hotinnit · 12/07/2022 16:50

Have you got his comments about it being a woman's job in writing?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 12/07/2022 16:53

Ok, so he is the boss. Knowing what I know now, I would just remove it from your CV. You should have comeback, but in RL it often doesn't happen Angry

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 12/07/2022 17:16

Yanbu he sounds like a complete twat.

Darbs76 · 12/07/2022 17:28

Good on you, he sounds horrific to work for. I’m sorry you’re left with no job but you’ve got your pride and we all admire you for standing up for yourself

Krakinou · 12/07/2022 17:43

Not unreasonable, but was it a good decision to leave without a backup? I’m not sure how employment law works in the uk. Here in Spain if you’re fired without good reason (gross incompetence, abuse etc.) you will get decent redundancy pay and be entitled to unemployment benefits. Whereas if you just quit you get nothing. So if you find yourself in a rubbish position here it’s better to just do your hours and try to not give a crap about the mess around you until you find something better. I wonder if that’s what the lady you replaced was doing? If the boss was as unreasonable with her, maybe she was just doing the bare minimum till maternity leave.
