To leave a job I love?

I left teaching to take on another public sector role. It was a significant pay cut but we could afford it. This was a few months ago. I really love the job and the team. Recently another job came up, same kind of role but private sector with 16% pay increase, half the commute, private health, lunch included, same holiday allowance as now. I’ve been offered and accepted it. But I feel guilty and in an attempt to make me stay others are piling on the guilt too. AIBU to leave for entirely practical reasons??

You have to put yourself first.
y husband once pointed out to me that if I died my job would be advertised. We have to look after number one at work, and take the job that’s best for you.

Yanbu.

if it’s the right thing for you then there’s no need to feel guilty. The job sounds far better from your description.

Who on earth would make you feel guilty for improving your working situation? Only martyrs stay in the public sector for altruistic reasons, when they've received a better offer. It sounds as if you've spent several years in the public sector anyway so have paid your dues. Are they jealous?

How does pension compare?

Half the commute would probably be enough for me to feel no guilt at all. Serve your notice period with dignity and hard work, be polite to those you work with, leave with your head held up high.

Of course not, don't be ridiculous!

@justfiveminutes how did you guess? 😂Over 20 years in various public sector roles!
