Class size increase AIBU?

I’ve name changed for this.

we are in a school that is three form entry. One of the year groups in Juniors is being increased to four form entry to accommodate children coming from Ukraine and Hong Kong.

our children were all set and ready (had met their new teacher as classes were being changed). I’m not a NIMBY but 4 classes a year seems so high! we’ve been told
it will mean smaller class sizes but we think that’s only initially as the classes will be split up.

however it’s only one year group not the others. It’s inevitable as it seems the school has been told to do it by the LA.

Wish my kids class size was that small!

Sorry but this stinks of racism.

Suprima · 11/07/2022 20:41

ClassSize2022 · 11/07/2022 20:37

im not sure how many extra children joining the year group. Let’s say 20? That’s 110 kids over 4 classes so probably more like 26-28 kids per class

I still don’t understand your issue

I have taught at 4 and 5 form entry schools. It literally makes no difference to the invididual child’s experience apart from more kids at playtime

why does it matter if there are 4 max capacity classes in the year?

EssexSerpent · 11/07/2022 20:42

What a stupid thread.

chilledbubble · 11/07/2022 20:45

I hope the unwelcoming attitude doesn't wear off on the kids

LittleSockOfHorrors · 11/07/2022 20:45

My dc went to a five form entry school. It was bigger than the secondary school they go to now. It was a brilliant experience and I would absolutely choose a big school again for my own dc.

Don't be sorry. It does. Heaven forbid some foreign children should get spaces in the school.
I despair of people sometimes.

BiscuitLover3678 · 11/07/2022 20:49

I really, really think you’re over worrying. 4 form entry is quite normal.
Smaller class sizes will be so good for your child! And more children in the year for your child to make friends with and learn about different cultures.
Change can be good.

And? What's the problem, exactly?

Fairislefandango · 11/07/2022 20:51

No idea what your problem with this is. Presumably the school and the lical authority are better placed than you to say whether the school building can accommodate the extra class? How is this actually going to affect your child except by possibly having a slightly smaller class?!

BendingSpoons · 11/07/2022 20:53

I don't think that one extra class in the school will make any difference to your DC. DD is at a 3 form entry school and occasionally they have a bulge year. Only ever one at a time, as there is only 1 spare classroom. Presumably the LA have chosen your school as they have the space. There will be some minor logistical issues for the school e.g. fitting them all in at lunch, but I doubt your DC will notice beyond commenting e.g. 'did you know class X eat their lunch with another year/in another room' etc.

So your kids still do better than most.

MojoMoon · 11/07/2022 20:57

Great opportunity to talk to your child about resilience and getting on with situations that sometimes change and are out of our control.

The kids from Ukraine and Hong Kong will have lots of experience of being resilient in the face of war, political oppression and leaving your entire life behind.

Resilience is the great marker of likely success in life so good for your kid to practice it a bit.

Having 4 forms instead of 3 is no great change. Bulge years are common.

Silverfinch · 11/07/2022 21:00

Oh no OP, they'd already met their teacher. What a traumatic upheaval this will be for them. I do hope that the Ukrainian children are kind to them and appreciate what an appalling ordeal yours will have suffered

FlissyPaps · 11/07/2022 21:00

YABVU.

You haven’t really listed any reasons to be concerned. Do you see these children from
overseas as a threat??

chilledbubble · 11/07/2022 21:01

Why would you want your child to be limited to meeting as few people as possible. It's very sad.

Herja · 11/07/2022 21:03

I genuinely do not have a clue what the OPs issue is. Does anyone else? I'm not sure if there's a problem I'm just not seeing?

So there is a bulge class. But, so what? No difference to your own kids, is there. Just a few extra people to play with at play time. Even more so as you've explained the school is receiving additional funding. Unless I'm missing something, you just sound like you're being a twat over nothing.

AFS1 · 11/07/2022 21:03

My son is 4-form entry. Has had no negative impact whatsoever.

You haven’t missed anything and yep just being a twat.

Emsmaman · 11/07/2022 21:07

I'd be concerned that once they reached ks2 and they don't have to legally keep the classes 30 or under they will reduce the number of classes, just because I've seen that happen before..however nothing you can do about that now but be ready to fight it if and when it happens.

OooErr · 11/07/2022 21:11

Huh.
Thread after thread on children being given school places very far away from catchment. Or no places at all. People fighting for expensive houses in catchment areas.
People from HK value education highly and are very rich. They’re unlikely to buy houses in areas with shit schools. Or in rural seas.

Your LA must have a lot of £££ to open loads of classes at one school instead of scattering people. Strange all around

EssexSerpent · 11/07/2022 21:13

@ClassSize2022

That may be so but at least I don’t start threads that appear to be highly ill informed at best, and at worst racist.

cansu · 11/07/2022 21:14

You should be pleased that the school is able to help these children. Instead you are worrying that 'the building can't take it'.
