That depends which pronunciation system you're using.

TeaStory · 11/07/2022 14:20

I would say "LUKE- ear-ay".

Thelnebriati · 11/07/2022 14:22

If you click the icon on google Translate you can hear it being spoken;
translate.google.com/?sl=auto&tl=en&text=Lucere%20&op=translate

TeaStory · 11/07/2022 14:23

No, sorry, I’d say “luke-EAR-ay”.

But GCSE Latin was almost a quarter of a century ago for me!

CheshireChat · 11/07/2022 14:23

Loo- che (as in check)- re (as in restroom)

CarrieErbag · 11/07/2022 14:23

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 11/07/2022 14:20

I have no idea of any Latin at all, so pronunciation systems mean nothing.
I should have guessed this wouldn't be simple 🙄

Google 😳 suggests LOO-cher-e

Immaterialatthispoint · 11/07/2022 14:24

Lu- sair-ay.

sair like hair.

lucere is to shine isn’t it? So lucere like lucid (clarity, bright) and Lake Lucerne….

StationaryMagpie · 11/07/2022 14:24

loo-cherray is the only way i can think to write it.

VeryQuaintIrene · 11/07/2022 14:25

What's the context that you need to know it for (this might help with which pronunciation is most suitable)?

StationaryMagpie · 11/07/2022 14:25

my experience coming from being a church chorister and having to sing it a few times btw

LucyLocketLostThePlot · 11/07/2022 14:25

My DD who has just finished Latin year 8 agrees with this pronunciation.

StationaryMagpie · 11/07/2022 14:26

its like, excelsis in the song hosanna in excelsis, is said exchelsis.

CarrieErbag · 11/07/2022 14:26

No offense but I don't want a Google reference I want a bona fide Latin expert 😁

OP posts:
CarrieErbag · 11/07/2022 14:28

Context is someone sent me a letter with that as my name on the envelope.

VeryQuaintIrene · 11/07/2022 14:30

I am one (a real live classics prof) so again, what is the context that you need to know it for? Most of the pronunciations are correct - basically classical Latin would use a hard C and church Latin would pronounce it as a "ch" and yes, emphasis on 2nd syllable "AIR--eh" or something like that.

VeryQuaintIrene · 11/07/2022 14:30

Then either, depending on whether you feel more more classical or churchy!

0blio · 11/07/2022 14:33

Well I'm no expert but I did pass O level Latin and would pronounce it Look-er-ay. We were taught to pronounce all letters as they were written.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 11/07/2022 14:33

A bona fide Latin expert would only explain to you that they can either tell you the reconstructed classical pronunciation that's currently used in teaching Latin (which would pronounce the c as k), the traditional English pronunciation that was used by those learning Latin in this country prior to the early 20th century (which would pronounce the c as s) and which hangs around in our Latin loanwords, or the mediaeval ecclesiastical-type pronunciation that was used in the church and which you can hear in Latin hymns (which would pronounce the c as tch). The context is important for knowing which pronunciation you'll want.

StationaryMagpie · 11/07/2022 14:33

this video might help, its latin being spoken, nearly every time they say something with an c/vowel in its pronoucned with a 'ch' sound.

I sang opera and church latin for 20 years, MY semi-profession opinion is its loo-cheray

CarrieErbag · 11/07/2022 14:33

In that case In going for the churchy version, it sounds less harsh.
Thank you all so much, you clever lot.

WhoppingBigBackside · 11/07/2022 14:35
