Ed Balls for Labour leader!

Whereswoolysweater · 11/07/2022 08:54

Very disappointed in Labour’s lacklustre performance. The Tories are making it easy for them, but they are going to get into office in their current form. I’m a floating voter and just want a competent government and PM in power. I feel depressed looking at the Tory candidates.

AIBU to want Ed Balls to become an MP again and launch a take over as leader of the Labour Party. Is this even a possibility? I also really like Yvette Cooper, but she’s not as popular with the public.

Ed Balls has charisma in spades, and according to a YouGov poll is the second most popular politician in the U.K. despite being out of office for 7 years. Yvette or Andy Burnham as his number 2 Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Come on Ed, you’re my only hope! Or is there anyone else who has the necessary charisma, but is also competent?

We are not getting a new improved Tory leader. Have you seen the candidates? All the sleaze & none of the 'charm'.

I voted for Yvette Cooper for Labour leader whenever it was she stood - I think she's brilliant - but Kier Starmer will bloody DO after this shower. Honestly we're like kids who keep thinking the sun shines out of our Disney Dad's arse while our 'tedious' step dad comes and picks us up from the club at 2am every Saturday for no thanks. As an electorate, we need to grow up and vote for someone who actually gives a shit about people's everyday lives rather than who has the twinkles their teeth and then zooms off in a Ferrari.

BTW delightful though this chat about Labour leaders is, could someone direct me back to a thread on the most dramatic Tory leadership election in decades (probably in my life)?

I've lost sight of the threads, Search is still fucked, and MN must surely be heaving with them?

PerkingFaintly · 11/07/2022 21:10

Or is so the trauma so great that Tory voters can't bring themselves to talk about it at the moment? Grin

I could understand if they'd rather distract themselves with comforting chats about the Labour party just now...

For those saying Ed Balls didn’t perform very well in the past, don’t you think the bar is much lower now and the talent so thin (on all sides) that he isn’t looking like too bad a prospect

Popularity wins elections and he is definitely popular. Others can devise the policy! Labour just need to get their foot in the door.

Don't think he is even an MP. So a waste of a post. 🙄

User135644 · 11/07/2022 21:11

The Tories usually to bully him at the despatch box over his speech impediment.

he’s smarmy, a goody two shoes, know it all and boring, and takes himself too seriously.

I have a few isues with Starmer, but honestly this criticism is so infuriating to me. He's aiming to be Prime Minister, not presenter of a game show.

I WANT leaders that are good, that know a lot (even it all), that are boring and that take themselves seriously.

The alternative to that is someone who is bad, knows nothing, is sensational and thinks what they do is a joke. Ahem, Johnson.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I know it was a Tory tagline but "strong and stable" is what people need to feel. Labour should be reiterating this (or rather a version of) and let the Tories pull each other apart

I haven’t seen any. The usual suspects are keeping very quiet.

Penguinwaddles · 11/07/2022 21:25

He really isn’t. He’s a lawyer. He deals in facts, truth, detail. Yes that makes him seem pedantic but he doesn’t exaggerate for effect, or play to the crowd or appeal to the lowest common denominator, he is factual and detailed and understated and I would far rather have that than the current encumbent any day.

CulturePigeon · 11/07/2022 21:34

I think Yvette would be better.

MiniTheMinx · 11/07/2022 21:41

If it were Rachel Reeves I might be convinced to vote Labour.

Yet posting threads about Labour leadership? Grin

Well who can blame them.

I'm watching In The Loop for light relief. Less absurd and much less cringeworthy than current reality.

There isn't enough popcorn in the world for the Tory leadership debacle...

Whereswoolysweater · 11/07/2022 21:48

@Penguinwaddles you don’t need to convince me! I’m just reiterating the popular public opinion of Starmer. Of course it’s not the truth, but that’s a common perception of him by those outside Labour Party members.

Why? She’s shadow Chancellor, why isn’t that reason enough? This bloody populist presidential shit makes no sense.

PerkingFaintly · 11/07/2022 21:52

And that's why you felt the need to start a thread repeating it. Grin

InChocolateWeTrust · 11/07/2022 21:53

A few years ago I'd have said no, but I'd probably welcome old Ed balls back now.

The current crop of politicians truly are execrable.

InChocolateWeTrust · 11/07/2022 21:54

I'm sorry but as a long standing labour party member I just can't warm to Keir Starmer. I voted Lisa Nandy in the leadership race.

ddl1 · 11/07/2022 21:55

Blossomtoes · 11/07/2022 20:44

I think he was possibly the best Labour Party leader we never had

The best Labour PM we never had was John Smith. How different it could all have been if he’d had a stronger heart.

Agree! John Smith would have been an excellent PM.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 11/07/2022 22:05

Neither would get my vote as they are like much of the Labour Party strongly in the TWAW camp, their son was one of the activists who recently attacked Nadim Zahowi on an official university visit

until they recognise this is a huge issue to many women who have remained silent until recently due to the no debate bullying of women they will remain In opposition

WaitroseWoman · 11/07/2022 22:06

I did wonder whether this was a Tory bot thread when I saw the title.

Justanotherlurker · 11/07/2022 22:09

Is the bigger victory to win or to play with integrity. (I don't know the answer!)

Shout from the sidelines or actually make difficult decisions is what you are implying, the 'integerity' angle is a being scared of actually making devisive positionsm like it or not people are going to have to adress HOC statements shuch as this

"Nobody should be under any illusions that they are going to be able to live a life on benefits. If you can work you should be working, and under our compulsory jobs guarantee if you refuse that job you forgo your benefits".

Justanotherlurker · 11/07/2022 22:12

excuase the typos, still can't edit on this site :/

Who will you vote for if Penny Mordaunt is the next PM?

InChocolate

Ah now, that's interesting because I'm not a Labour voter, but I love Keir Starmer. My sister worked with him and says he's got genuine integrity. I like his old-fashioned earnestness and lack of flashiness which makes me inclined to trust him.

But being realistic, it might make him vulnerable as a politician in a nest of snakes who have no such standards. How sad.
