Aibu to think they should cancel sports day tomorrow?

They cancelled it a couple of weeks ago because the weather was poor, now we’ve just received a text from the senior school reminding us to send in hats, sun cream and extra drinks as “the weather is forecast to be very hot tomorrow” (temp is looking to be 31degrees).

Surely, it’s as inappropriate to expect the kids to do sports days in hot weather as it is in wet weather???

Yabu - get a grip/it won’t do them any harm
YANBU - too hot/could be a bit silly/dangerous!

Get a grip. There is going to be a football World Cup in Qatar 😂

For most sports days kids aren't competing constantly, are they. It is a bit of a logistical nightmare trying to reschedule it. I'm a bit on the fence as it is very hot. I think on balance it's okay for secondary school pupils. If they had PE tomorrow it would still be going ahead. Are they expected to be outside for the whole day?

coffeecupsandfairylights · 10/07/2022 22:57

Unless there's shade for them to sit under when they're not competing, I think it should be cancelled.

Needmorelego · 10/07/2022 22:57

@XelaM in a purpose built stadium with air conditioning I expect. Not your local school field with no shade.

GroggyLegs · 10/07/2022 22:57

They'll be under canopy/gazebos or in the shade I'd guess?

thechiefstew · 10/07/2022 22:58

Sun hats, sun cream and lots of water. School should provide some gazebos or similar for the children to sit in the shade when they aren’t competing.

balalake · 10/07/2022 22:58

This is Britain. People are often not prepared for weather above 25C. Probably to avoid a litany of complaints or children being kept at home, best for the school to cancel or reduce the number of events.

Jowasace · 10/07/2022 23:04

It’s a very open field - some trees around the outside but that’s it. They have no gazebos. My daughter is reasonably fit - she dances for 12/14 hrs every week. But she has low blood pressure and I think the heat maybe a bit of a problem for her. As I understand it, each year group are out for two hours, overlapping with others groups.

I think it would be a shame for the kids if it was Cancelled and let’s be honest they missed out so much when the schools were closed here in the UK due to Covid.
Yes it’s hot but I’m sure they will transfer sports day into the school gym/hall and do everything they can to ensure all the children are well hydrated and have a fun time.

Veryverycalmnow · 10/07/2022 23:06

Yes, it should be cancelled, unless the school has sorted gazebos or has a good shaded area.
We did go ahead and it was 22° and felt unbearable for staff and kids. Parents had brought their own big umbrellas and parasols and were still too hot.
It was on the edge of being disastrous but I think if yours is going to be hotter they should reconsider.

alexdgr8 · 10/07/2022 23:08

i can't see them having it indoors.
just do what's best for your daughter.
there is no virtue in needless suffering.
i know what i'd do.

IGotItInTheSales · 10/07/2022 23:50

its just summer!!!

22c was “unbearable”?! I can sort of understand concerns once the temperature is over 30c, albeit I think it’s fine if it just a couple of hours, but 22c is just a pleasant summers day surely?

CredibilityProblem · 11/07/2022 00:03

I'd be concerned that they're not reassuring you that they'll be making sensible adjustments to the day - the tone of that email suggests, (rightly or wrongly) that they think that a hat, a dash of sunscreen at 8am and a bottle of luke warm water will make it absolutely fine to run around in a playing field with no shade in 30 degree heat for four hours.

dreamingbohemian · 11/07/2022 00:24

I was just posting about this. Ours is Tuesday when it's supposed to be 33, at a separate playing field not at the school, with no shade. I really hope they cancel, my DS is super fair and burns so easily.

Tablechairtable · 11/07/2022 00:26

Completely agree with you OP. Most sensible parents wouldnt let their dcs sit out in intense heat for hours so why do schools insist on this for their precious sports day. Passes me off tbh. Its not just summer-its extra hot and sitting in it without shade for hours. Thats completely different.
