Does this look like periorbital cellulitis?

I noticed DD’s eye was a little bit sore yesterday. It’s got worse and now looks like this. Would 111 be an overreaction? Posting here for traffic. Thanks.

No it looks like a stye in the lower lid

Incywincyspi · 10/07/2022 20:36

I’d say it does. I’ve had it before and that’s exactly how it started. Does it feel warm ?

a little. She’s got no temperature or pain it’s just the redness. Is this an A&E job? Thanks for replying by the way

For reference, this was 1yo DS with periorbital cellulitis. When did it come up? If you're even slightly concerned please take him straight to A&E. Luckily we caught it early but it can be very serious if not treated quickly

*take her. Apologies!

My daughter gets sore lumps on her eyes. We've had several professionals look at them including GPs and an optician who specialises in children. They've all said they're mybomian cysts, otherwise known as blepharitis I think. The treatment for those is to put a very warm wet compress on the affected eye(s) and the water needs to be as hot as 40°C.

Children's eyes are so so precious. Please don't seek diagnosis on the internet. Phone your GP in the morning and seek a proper medical opinion and recommendations for treatment.

My 3 year old with periorbital cellulitis earlier this year - before we went to a&e. We were in for 3 nights on IV antibiotics, and then had IV antibiotics daily on trips for a few more days, then oral antibiotics. GP diagnosed a stye, but the speed of deterioration was insane.

Not sure about yours op as it's less red than ours, but best to get it checked and be alert :)

I’ve had this before too as an adult and it got worse very quickly. I would call 111 as a minimum - I had to have IV antibiotics as it didn’t respond to the antibiotics I was given by an out of hours GP

My son had exactly the same....he had the mumps 2 weeks previous and they think it was all linked together.
His eye was completely closed and 3 doctors at the surgery never spotted it....I should have took him to hospital right away...was horrific

Carrotzen · 10/07/2022 21:27

No. That is not periorbital cellulitis. Its just some mild redness. See the GP tomorrow.

Periorbital cellulitis in itself does not need Ed. If it deteriorates, and his eye is swollen shut then consider ED. But until thay point he doesn't not need to go

My 4yo had peri orbital cellulitis a couple of months ago. He got very poorly, very quickly. Went from a nasty temperature and very lethargic, with a slightly swollen eye one afternoon (GP wasn't concerned, thought it was probably a respiratory virus) to fully swollen shut and straight into hospital for 4 days the next morning. Really scary, but fully sorted thanks to the fantastic hospital.

I wouldn't presume to diagnose from your photos - but it doesn't look as swollen as DS's did. He was also very poorly along side the swollen eye, very high temperature for a couple of days before the swelling was visible etc. I don't know if that's always the case though. If you're in any doubt call 111. Hope your little one feels better soon.

Mine started with redness like that but then it took a while to get swollen. Initially Gp gave antibiotics but it just got worse. Had to go to the eye hospital as had a cyst on inside of eyelid that caused the infection and needed to be looked at with specialist equipment that they didn’t have. More antibiotics and attempts to flip my eyelid inside out / clamp it and burst the cyst. Mine was red underneath and warm to the touch and gradually got worse over a couple of days.

Thank you everyone. We had it checked by out of hours who didn’t feel it was infected - Im inclined to agree at this point as it isn’t worse today, no temperature or puffiness etc. They think possibly hayfever or some kind of non specific injury.
