Why did I gain 3st in a year?

I’m 12stone 6lbs. This time last year I was 9st 4. 1 month ago I was 11st 12. I’m 5ft 0.
nothings changed in my diet since last year apart from cutting out fizzy, in fact due to the cost of living I’m eating less, I haven’t eaten out or had a takeaway since April, I stopped drinking fizzy drinks so now it’s just water or tea (no sugar or sweeteners) I barely even eat snacks… never have chocolate, crisps or sweets in the house just not that kind of person. Average day looks like porridge with apples and cinnamon (I don’t eat this to lose weight I just really like it) lunch is pasta, sandwich, wrap etc, dinner is home cooked meal, I get hello fresh every week, might have a yoghurt in the evening

gave up my car 3 months ago so walking sooo much more, surely I should be losing weight? I’m 23 and I don’t have any health conditions, I don’t take any medication or contraception.

confused?

See a doctor. If you're putting on that much weight and really truthfully nothing has changed then there is something wrong.

Marasme · 10/07/2022 19:25

Did you get your thyroid checked?

Withthewind · 10/07/2022 19:26

@Marasme It was checked a couple years ago for other reasons and they said it’s fine. My brother has an under active thyroid.

@Lockheart I don’t have a doctor

That in awful lot of weight to gain - just a thought - when did you start eating Hello Fresh?

00100001 · 10/07/2022 19:28

Well porridge could be anywhere from 40g of oats cooked with water, to 150g cooked with nearly a pint of full fat milk...

A sandwich could be anywhere between 300-800 calories....

Count your calories and then you'll know a bit more.

I

Withthewind · 10/07/2022 19:32

@00100001 the porridge is 180 calories (30g oats + 100ml soya milk with half an apple)

3st in one year works out to having an average of an extra 400 kcal per day over what you need. All that would need to happen is eating a little more and moving a little less, and you'd be there.

Without scrupulously weighing and measuring everything, it'd be hard to say why you've put on the weight. If you exercise regularly it might be time to switch up your routine, since the amount you burn gets more and more efficient over time.

This is all assuming no metabolic or endocrine disorders are presenting, too. It's worth being re-checked if you can.

SunshinePie · 10/07/2022 19:37

Well I’m guessing you’ve eliminated the obvious 🤰

Twotinydictators · 10/07/2022 19:39

I would keep a diary of what I was eating and the calories for a few weeks so I had something tangible to take to the Dr. Keeping a record of the walking/exercise that I was doing too. Hopefully that will be enough to get them to take you seriously and investigate, there's something not right for you to be gaining that much weight without an obvious reason. I hope you get to the bottom of it and it's nothing serious.

She didn't ask if you have a doctor or not she said to see one. Surely you realise seeing a doctor about it would be one of the first things to do?

Astella22 · 10/07/2022 19:52

I had a similar experience in my case it was a combination of early onset menopause and thyroid. I’m still waiting for treatment but hopefully at my next apt it will be sorted. I find it almost impossible to loose weight

DoingJustFine · 10/07/2022 20:23

It'll be the thyroid, I should think. NHS "healthy" levels might still allow your thyroid to be extremely under-active. They said my iron levels were "healthy" when I'd got so anaemic my hair was falling out.

Can you find your blood test results and post them here? Someone will know.

justfiveminutes · 10/07/2022 20:34

Keep a food diary for a few weeks or use an app that calculates the calories for you. My guess is that you're eating more calories than you think. If you find that you are eating no more than your maintenance allowance for your height, it could be something medical.
