Okay so can someone tell me if this plant pot I've bought looks ridiculous?! Like the pot is too big right?

I've made 3 different trips to TK Maxx this weekend as the pots I previously got were too small and one yday fitted snug . Today I got this one - it was out of this and another one which was not as wide and I went for this one because I thought the bottoms leaves would be trapped or not have as much room to grow .... but thinking I've made a mistake and looks like I'll be heading to TK Maxx again tomorrow .

Who knew buying pots for such a large plant would be so hard!!

Do you intend to re pot it into the new , bigger pot ? If so that will be perfect!

Hello... tbh no. I just want a pot to put the pot it came in into ... quite sad it's turned out like this after all my trips haha.

All my other plants I tend to buy with that inner pot and they come with an outdoor pot generally when buying so just want to echo that really...

Do you think I should just do away with that inner pot then and fully repot with more soil?

Is it a decorative pot to hold the plastic pot? If so, just add some gravel/stones in the base to raise the plastic pot up a bit. Also helps with drainage and humidity.

No! You need a drainage hole. I'm assuming the bigger pot doesn't have one?

Hello, yes that's right just a decorative plant to hold the pot indeed. That might be a good idea about adding gravel and stones and raising the pot ... thank you.

Do you have any suggestions as to where to get gravel and stones from for this purpose?
This is my first time doing this, generally all the plants I have in the house always come with a selected decorative pot, so any help would be appreciated ...

It actually looks alright looking at it from the outside but when I look at it from the angle of the pics it just looks silly

Hello, yes it has it has a drainage hole, I aligned the inner pot drainage hole directly on top of it so it is stable in the pot with no wobbling at all

FML, I keep losing my post.
If the outer pot has a drainage hole, the gravel thing won't work. And you'll need a saucer to protect your surfaces.
I think your plant will be fine in there - plants need air as well as water.

If you want to get an outer pot with no hole, that's what I'd use the gravel for (I'd grab a handful from the driveway, or someone else's in the dead of night :-) )

Gotcha, so you think leave as is? It doesn't look silly when looking at it from the angles of the pics? Like head on?

And anything solid to raise it up a bit is fine: I've used lego before.

PlatinumBrunette · 10/07/2022 17:18

I think it looks lovely :-)

I'd re pot it personally so that pot size is fine for that. What does it look like from the side?

Quirkyme · 10/07/2022 18:21

@AbreathofFrenchair

When you say repot so get rid of the inner pot? Wasn't someone saying I would need a saucer for that as the pot has a drainage hole?

Plants often grow to the size of the pot so if you're not repotting then it wont get much bigger.

If you do report size wise, aim for a pot that's 1-2 inches bigger than the plant. The pot should be around half the height of the plant.

Quirkyme · 10/07/2022 18:23

@AbreathofFrenchair

This app is useless just tried to attach pics and wouldn't work.

I dunno what to do now.

Think I'm going to go back to the store tomorrow because this doesn't look right to me with the big gap between both pots tbh

If you re-pot in a pot with holes, then you will need a saucer underneath to catch any water that comes out through the holes. Some pots come with their own saucers, like the terracotta ones. I don't water my plants from the top, I sit them in a shallow bath for a couple of hours then sit them back on the saucer. They only soak up what they need this way

I usually re-pot after the first year. Sometimes sooner if the plant gets that big its falling over. If you gently lift it out and the roots are pressed up against the edge and growing in a circle then it needs a bigger pot.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/07/2022 18:48

It looks fine to me. I think it would look 'too heavy' in a smaller pot.

Galliano · 10/07/2022 19:02

Repot the plant in a slightly bigger plastic pot and put back in ornamental pot.
Stand ornamental pot on saucer if you intend to have it inside or pot feet outside.

Quirkyme · 11/07/2022 16:20

Hey everyone thanks for your help... I got a pot today that's much more fitting and it's perfect... just took a few tries to get there!

😊
