Energy bills direct debit

Hi all
Genuine question - what happens if people can't pay £££ for their enegry and cancel direct debit? After notifying the energy provider. What happens if people collectively do that?

The idea is that you build up a credit over summer so that you have an excess in your account for winter use - otherwise your bills in winter will be extremely high and very low in summer (unless you literally don’t use your heating in winter). The idea with direct debits being at the same amount all year round is to enable this build up of credit. By cancelling and paying for just what you use month by month you will be facing astronomical bills in winter especially now with the October price hike coming.

No gas. Oil heating. Electric usage similar all year round.

If you are on benefits they take the debt out of your money before you get it, the maximum they can take a week I think is £5.

Interestingly we are not the only ones thinking like this.

Do this and you just become cannon fodder. Don't Pay UK just want a bunch of lemmings to jump on the bandwagon not thinking about what it actually means.

the reality is, if you value your credit rating, if you have a mortgage or in rented accommodation and need to move, your credit rating will be in tatters if you act rogue and just stop paying your utility bills. You are far better to work with them, than decide to go it alone.

stopping payments of your DD does not come without consequences.

You can rebuild a credit rating.

Your credit rating will also be affected if you default on a payment because you simply cannot afford it.

And what is the point of a credit rating anyway if you've starved to death/frozen to death? Think about it.

But there's a difference between your credit rating being trashed because you can't vs because you're making a political statement.

For some people this will be their reality (and frankly I could end up being one), for everyone else, not paying for the energy they've used because of moral outrage is a stupid idea. Encouraging people to do this is contemptible.

Greentime101 · 31/07/2022 07:46

To switch from monthly DD to quarterly payment with old fashioned paper billing will not incur you all the penalties above - good grief people accidentally cancel DD me and miss payments all the time - it will however show the energy companies the flow of cash has stopped. I am willing to sacrifice my pathetic DD discount for this

To repeat so so so many people won’t be paying the bill anyway as they don’t have the money - so let’s not frighten them to death with the information above! The new charges are outrageous Government needs to take action

Imagine all the profit the energy companies are making from people being 'in credit'. So the money isn't even rightfully theirs yet, but they'll be making millions from our money. Not a chance they're doing it to help us spread the cost out. That's just a consequence. Greedy unscrupulous bastards.
