High sleeper

Hi,

Sorry obviously posting here for traffic.

Thinking of getting my eldest a high sleeper bed. Its mostly to overcome the storage and space issue we currently face. Shes 9. I'm reluctant because of how long it may last her. Not sure many teens would appreciate sleeping in a high sleeper. Do any of you have teens who have one?

Cheers

Ask her opinion

the illustrated mum · 10/07/2022 11:44

Sorry @Hilda40 should have said in op she won't be able to understand if I ask her and probably would struggle to come up with a proper answer or verbalise what she wants

Yes I’ve recently got them for my boys aged 14 and 11. I bought small double high sleepers from Beds and Bunks via Amazon. Reasonable price and came with a mattress. 100kg weight limit, really solid. They love them!

jimmyhill · 10/07/2022 11:52

Based on what you've said she must have quite significant learning difficulties? So maybe a high sleeper will work for longer?

It's just an elevated bed. Can't see why a teen couldn't sleep in one.

DockOTheBay · 10/07/2022 15:07

I knew plenty of people when I was a teenager who had a high sleeper bed. It meant they had space for a desk or sofa underneath. I think it's a good idea.

greenacrylicpaint · 10/07/2022 15:14

my youngest has a high sleeper (the ikea thing with desk under and wardrobe built in). it's great if you are short on space and have decent head height in the room.

changing the sheets is a bastard, but dc is doing that.

craftsupplyhoarder · 10/07/2022 15:14

Why would a teen, specifically, not want one? If it's a good use of the space, it makes sense to do it. I think it would be more of a worry with a younger child who might be more likely to roll off the bed in their sleep.

LondonWolf · 10/07/2022 15:15

Oh useful thread. I'm looking at these for my teens as well.

XelaM · 10/07/2022 15:22

My daughter has a really high one from Ikea (the metal one). We got it when she was around 9-10 because she was begging for one. She's 12 now and it's been brilliant. It saves so much space and it's very big and comfortable. She still liked it now.

I always wanted one as a kid and my mum refused because she said that I wouldn't want one when I was a teen, but I still wanted one as a teen!!! Grrr. Never got one.

Caspianberg · 10/07/2022 15:22

I had one as a teen. Remember hating it as had tiny room and it meant no space for friends over to easily sit down. My brother had same size room and low bed and friends could sit and game or watch tv easier. Bed changing also a pain

If I wanted space now. I would get a low bed with drawers underneath for storage. Ie ikea hemnes. Add shelves to wall at bottom of bed.

XelaM · 10/07/2022 15:28

I think it depends on the bed. The metal ones from Ikea are very spacious. My daughter shares it with a friend when she has people staying over (they sleep at each end of the bed).

Pic attached of the one we have. I see it's out of stock though.

It wasn’t space as such, three people could have climbed up. Just if you 15-18 and a friend pops over to get ready with you, have some pizza or watch a film, it’s awkward carrying popcorn and hot chocolate up a wobbly ladder.
The day bed style singles with drawers, mean you can add cushions and use as a kind of sofa.

If your daughter has some additional needs and you might need to help settle, Medicine or similar it might be easier lower.

zoopigi · 10/07/2022 15:40

My 16 year old got one last year and is quite happy with it.she begged for this bed and it works well in her room, we have a camp bed that her friends sleep on for a sleepover

Dilbertian · 10/07/2022 15:54

We had Flexa beds for dc1 and dc2. When we stopped using them in high sleeper/bunk arrangements and turned them into two singles, we stored the converting parts in the loft.

At 16 dc2 asked for their bed to be turned into a high sleeper. They still sleep in it at 19 and have no desire to revert to a normal bed.

Was definitely a good investment for us!

the illustrated mum · 10/07/2022 17:40

Thanks all for the comments.

Mixed reviews as expected. People have made good points re settling and dc may need medication etc so probably going to look at a cabin type one that is lower. She has a decent size room but so much stuff that it really looks horrendous and cluttered.

My 13 yr old has had one for a few years. Her room is small and it's the only way we could fit a bed is a desk and wardrobe in the room. The wardrobe is separate but the high sleeper has a desk and a futon chair underneath. So she has a comfy chair to lounge about on and an extra bed if friends stay over.

Lilyhatesjaz · 10/07/2022 17:50

We bought one for my son, it is a full size single bed and he is still sleeping on it now. He is 24

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/07/2022 17:54

My DD has a double loft bed (so basically a double bed on stilts!) Under neath she has her desk, book case and a storage unit. She really likes her set up.
