Almost 4 year old counting constantly

Its been flagged up at pre school that he has some signs / traits of possible autism.

He’s into both numbers and letters at the moment. He can write words without help , just sounds them out himself. That’s not a problem. But my biggest concern at the moment is him wanting to count out loud constantly. And it’s not just 1-10, he keeps going, so we are on 180 this morning and he just keeps counting. If someone interrupts him or his flow, he gets very upset/frustrated and cries.

His speech and understanding is excellent and has been from an early age, so it’s not like I can’t explain things to him.

I know it’s likely he has autism at this point or some sort of ND. But how can I help him with the constant counting? It also drives me crazy. As it’s a repetitive sound and I think I’m quite sensitive to this kind of thing.

You help him by letting him do it. It's a stim and it feels safe to him. He isn't hurting anyone by doing it is he? Join in with him to show you respect his play. Your son sounds lovely. This stim will pass but please don't stop him.

Counting early isn’t a sign of autism and counting as high as you can is often a craze in small children. If he speaks well and understands your explanation why not just tell him to do it somewhere else as it’s annoying you?
