To ask about teaching interview?

So I've posted in the staffroom section but got no joy, so shamelessly posting for traffic here!

I've got a teaching interview for next Monday. I've got a lesson and an interview so that's fine, but I've also been told I'll have a data task. What on earth does this involve? It's just for a normal secondary teaching position, no TLR or anything. Will I just be given class data and asked to write something about it? Would it have to be like a report? Google isn't really helping me at the moment!

Some schools do this. Most only do for leadership roles. Basically, yes it’ll be some sort of data analysis task. So the data might show — for example — that a particular class has a higher percentage of male students who are not achieving their target grades, and maybe it might show that students at the top end are tending to underachieve etc etc. Basically you need to have a stab at analysing the data and they might also ask what you’d do with that data to help inform your teaching. The data analysis they expect is likely to be pretty basic though and hopefully won’t be too flummoxing in my experience.

I had one at an interview. It was a GCSE class list with data for each student and you had to write about which students you'd target and why, and what steategies you'd use to improve their grades. I found it really hard!

It'll be looking at a set of data for a class or group and identifying strengths and weakness or saying what next steps should be or which group needs extra interventions or something. You'll be able to write it as a paragraph or two, or they may give you a proforma, but you'll probably do it before the interview so they can ask you about your answer at the time.

Thanks all for your replies, I feel stupid having to ask! So I guess I could just write, for group A I would recommend...? The interview is straight after so I guess they will be asking about it right away!

And so does it give info about each test the class has had that year? So I would know if they needed to work on the Shakespeare part of the exam? Or just AO2 specifically? Eeek this is scarier than any other aspect of the day!

You need to comment on sub groups so PP/SEN/Boys/HA etc etc.

Fairislefandango · 10/07/2022 10:04

It's not about identifying what the whole class needs to work on, so much as identifying groups within the class which might be under-performing and need targeted support, such as boys, kids with SEN, pupil premium kids and talking about what you might do to address these areas.

Thanks all! :)

You’ll most likely be given a data sheet rather than a copy of the ‘question level analysis’, but if the data shows that disadvantaged boys are underachieving (most likely will be in English!) you could say that you’d look at the QLA to see if there are any trends in the strengths/weaknesses of this cohort of performing students. Might be useful for you to brush up on strategies for teaching disadvantaged students if you’re going to a school with a large number of pupil premium students. Also, be ready to talk about strategies to engage male learners.

*cohort of UNDERperforming students.
