2nd Vaccine for 12 year old after 8 weeks

Hi all please share any experiences. Posting in AIBU for traffic.

My son had a COVID vaccine straight after his 12th birthday on 13th May. I would now like him to have his second this week, 8 weeks after his first, before he goes on a residential school trip and brings it home to his grandmothers, one of whom lives with us and is vulnerable and the other is having bowel cancer treatment.

For six weeks I have had pointless communication with doctor's receptionists and no GP letter giving permission has been granted. It seems everyone there is avoiding the issue, that I want him to have one after 8 weeks and that his grandmother is vulnerable. They just say, 'Thr doctor has it on his list, it's in hand.' Well now, if I don't sort it tomorrow it's too late; I either give up or have time off in the week to take him - when they've deigned to deal with me, hopefully on Monday - after giving them six weeks' notice of my request.

AIBU to turn up to a walk in site on Sunday without a letter and persuade a pharmacist there to give the second vaccine early? I don't mind persuading/arguing, it's more because it's 19 miles away and with the price of petrol I could do without a fruitless journey.

Please share your experiences if you have just walked in and expected an early vaccine.

Many thanks

Not quite the same but DS had his 2nd vaccine at school and they were allowed to have it as long as the first one had been at least 8 weeks before.
So probably definitely worth a try?

Oooo thank you! That sounds encouraging! I hope others might have a similar experience too. You've cheered me up @Hihohihoitsofftoworkmaybe 😘

I would try booking it online. If it doesn't let you book him in then you know there's no point turning up to the walk in.

CousinLucy · 09/07/2022 12:36

Online only lets you book the standard 12 weeks, which is August 17th and useless for 18th July start of school trip. But I do believe it's a a case of, 'Computer says no' and it would do the same if he was vulnerable himself. You need a human to talk to and in the absence of my doctor my only option is 19 miles away to 'just see' 🙄🙄

Not what you asked but we are all triple vaccinated and still picked it up and spread to the family so please don't rely on this to keep the vulnerable family members safe as it won't make any difference at all!

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 09/07/2022 12:40

It takes up to 2 weeks to have the immune response for the vaccine to start working so even if he has it on the 17th he isn’t going to be covered for the trip and there is the risk he be unwell from the vaccine.

BendingSpoons · 09/07/2022 12:40

A friend wanted the vaccine a week early for her 12yo due to a holiday they had back in Feb. They had to try 3 walk in places before one agreed to do it.

If only the vaccine stopped you picking up Covid?

KangarooKenny · 09/07/2022 13:01

It he isn’t CEV so I wouldn’t give it.

CousinLucy · 09/07/2022 13:28

@KangarooKenny and you are? (Pharmacist / doctor / nurse?)

Yabu if you think they him having his second vaccine will prevent him catching it and stressing it to his granny
if granny is vulnerable they need to endure they are up to date with vaccines because you’re son having it won’t

RhymesWithAntelope · 09/07/2022 13:59

Can the people at the walk in override "computer says no"?

Might be worth a new/amended thread title asking vaccinators for their experience/opinions? Find out if they regularly make the call themselves or if there's no way of getting round it

CousinLucy · 09/07/2022 14:19

I don't t mean the people who walk in. 🙄 I mean the humans who have specialist knowledge as opposed to a computet which is a binary 'yes' or 'no'. If you see first comment by @Hihohihoitsofftoworkmaybe that's useful information to me.

No shit Sherlock

Obviously I didn't mean the people who walk in.

People were trying to help but don't let that stop you

I am immune compromised my ex has theirs before the general public ( ages 6-11) at 8 weeks apart. It’s a perfectly safe time frame so should be no issue.

LilacPoppy · 09/07/2022 17:52

*dc not ex

TimandGinger · 09/07/2022 18:07

You are very unreasonable making your young child feel he’s responsible for someone else’s health. Awful thing to do. So glad my parents don’t think that way about their grandchildren.
And yes I do work in healthcare.

Daisytomhope · 09/07/2022 18:14

My 12 year old dt had them 8 weeks apart due to living with ecv family. I had to bypass 119 and gp in the end and spoke to the ccg (had the vacw3 hours after ringing them up!)
Not helpful on a weekend but maybe try Monday morning.

CoastalWave · 09/07/2022 18:17

You seriously need to chill out.

amicissimma · 09/07/2022 18:26

I have been volunteering as a steward in vaccine centres for over a year. In my experience, only a doctor will overrule the 12 week gap, so you would need to find a centre with a doctor present. In the last place I worked about 6 families came in asking for an early second for their DCs for travel. The doctor agreed to 2 and refused the others. I didn't hear the conversation, just that only 2 continued into the centre.

Obviously I can't tell you what all vaccinators would say. You might find a doctor who was very flexible, or a pharmacist prepared to do it.
