Thinking of changing to a completely new career

I've got a languages degree and a PGCE. Since graduating in 2013 I've been a teacher for both children and adults, a TA, cover supervisor, private tutor, I've also been a support worker, care assistant, both in care homes and domiciliary care.
I'm signed up to all sorts of agencies and have the option to do any of the above as casual work when I wish, which is great.
However I feel like a complete change. I'm always told in the above roles that I need to have a 'firm' manner with people. I'm just not able to be, and I especially don't want to be 'firm' with elderly people, who've done nothing wrong except be elderly and have dementia.
I'm quite a shy and quiet person. I think I'm caring, which has helped, but ultimately I think I'm not really an outgoing, dominant person. I don't know how to motivate people.

I've always wanted to be in 'helping' roles I suppose.
But I'm thinking of a total change starting in September. I've been looking at customer service, computer based roles, working for banks, working for airlines, all sorts. I don't expect to start on a fantastic salary, If I could start on 21k I'd be happy.
I don't want to fail in these roles either. Has anyone else completely changed roles like this? I just want to find something I'm comfortable in and happy with.

  • some elderly people can be rude and challenging just as some younger people can be. But I've found certain care homes very soul destroying where people are shouted at to 'sit down' all day, given a lack of choice and treated like children. I don't want to be a part of it.

Anyone please?

You sound like you aren’t at allsure what you want.

I’d recommend checking out an organisation called career shifters, as they’ll help you think about that.

I guess you are early 30s so you don’t want to just drift. With a degree, a PGCE, language skills and a lot of life and work experience you should be able to find a career you like that pays decent money.

You need to earn enough to start a pension and have somewhere to live, so even if you have to start low you want to be able to build up quickly. In Commercial sectors I hope you could start higher than 21k
