God I know I sound like a right twat but the heat is getting to me ...

DS has his heart set on Manchester Uni but despite working his socks off, I don't think he's capable of getting the ABB they're asking for.

I'd never heard of Russell Group before MN but it appears to be the be and and end all.

Is it?

This thread seems to have turned into a "we hate RG universities". However you can't deny that all the RG universities are in the top third of the CUG (which can be taken with a pinch of salt)

I don't think there is anything wrong with pointing out that RG universities aren't the only universities worth going to, it doesn't mean people hate them!

vanillasunshine · 09/07/2022 23:16

I was in the same position...Manchester and knew I couldn't get the grades for the course I wanted to do. Choose a less popular but related course with lower entry requirements. As soon as I arrived at Manchester I requested a course change....was on the course I had originally wanted within two months...people drop out!
Yes this was the Olden days but would still work I'd have thought not obviously a risk.

And some of the best lawyers in the team that I lead didn't even go to university

How did they become lawyers? Genuinely interested please. I always thought you had to have a degree followed by a law conversion whatsit to be able to practice law.

SweetSakura · 10/07/2022 00:13

@Libre2 no you can train to become a legal executive - they join as apprentices and study as they work. It takes quite a number of years of juggling studying and working but at the end you have no student debt.

Firstly can I say that lots of courses expect these grades now and its nothing to do with the university 'name'.

What course does he want to do?
Has he looked at which have the best results/feedback?
Sunderland uni (ex poly) has amazing results in education, pharmacy, digital media etc.
Personally feel that if you're going 'for the name/presitge' you're going for the wrong reason.

My highest earning cousins are not the ones who went to Oxford but the ones who didn't get past GCSEs in terms of exams. Both set up and run businesses. The more successful was a multimillionaire in his 20s and the other directly employees over 100 people.

dropthevipers · 10/07/2022 00:56

Relax-Bristol is a Russell group Uni-the home of catgender and batshit woo woo.

OnenessWithAllStrife · 10/07/2022 01:00

It literally matters not one jot unless you want to get into something ridiculously elitist where “who you know” matters and going to oxbridge is the golden ticket. For some science careers it can help as RG unis get lots of research funding but really it’s only one small factor among many.

The class of degree you get matters much more, and if anything you’re more likely to get a 2:1 and in with a better stab at getting that first job from a lower ranked uni.

Once you’ve secured that first job, nobody gives a sh*t what uni you went to.

GnomeDePlume · 10/07/2022 07:20

Looking back, DD's school just didnt understand university application at all. Their view seemed to be: Oxford/Cambridge then everywhere else was just lumped together. Almost no guidance on choosing subjects, courses or institutions.

Do look at course details. DD was very sure of what she wanted to study. Many courses had the same name but were substantially different.

Also look at whether the institution will fit. DD rejected Bristol in favour of Sheffield because she felt that Bristol would be less supportive. As it turns out Sheffield have been very supportive. DD is about to start her Masters year. At times we didnt know if she would get there but with her determination and their support she has.

User952539 · 10/07/2022 08:10

The only reason Manchester might not seem huge is because it isn’t campus so you don’t view it all together and the students are dispersed over a wider area. It’s very big

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/07/2022 08:17

When did UMIST go? I had an A level student fo about 5 years ago.

I read somewhere that parents of kids in private schools are complaining that their children can’t get into Oxbridge anymore because of diversity.

They also said that they were the most targeted university from employers.

I stand corrected on this point. This is true ...Manchester and Nottingham are the two most targeted universities by employers.
There is an external agency who collects this data.

Lulu1919 · 10/07/2022 09:31

Daughter had offers from three of there Universities..chose a different one
She doesn't regret it ..she had a great experience passed with a first and is now a teacher with an excellent reputation !

I wonder why that is? And which employers target Nottingham and Manchester.

The size of the university and the courses they offer will be a big factor.

However, ALL universities work with employers so although these universities are the most targeted there is still a lot of work going on across all universities.

I know a couple of people whose kids go there and they hate it. I don’t specifically know why they do but found it curious that they felt that strongly about it. Maybe it’s too woke?

a few minutes googling will show that Bristol is woke central

DS2 went to a good university, just not RG. On graduation he went to The City and earns a lot of money and is very happy!

DD rejected Bristol because she was concerned that there would not be sufficient support for students academically. She said that in the course talk the attitude was 'we are Bristol, we aren't interested if you may need help sometimes'. It may not have been the impression they meant to give but it was the one they gave to DD.

Sheffield gave a different vibe. DD has an excellent relationship with her course tutor. This has been essential as her course is split between two schools so has taken a lot of coordinating both by DD and the course tutor.
