To be frightened for my daughter?

DD is 6 and has just had a biopsy carried out on a lump on her shin.

backstory is that I noticed the lump a couple of months ago, the GP x rayed it and then said it was a lump of soft tissue above the bone. They weren’t that worried but wanted to keep an eye on it so to bring her back if it wasn’t gone in a week. Took her back in, lump was still there and GP happened to find another lump on her other shin, exactly the same as the first but smaller. She thought this was a good sign, less concerning. She was then referred for an ultrasound. The doctors at hospital said they couldn’t tell if it was sinister or not so wanted to do an MRI which they managed to do the same day. At this stage, they said it would be an MRI followed by a biopsy the following week.

Anyway, we are now waiting for the biopsy results which we were told would take 7-10 days. Currently day 8 so I’m hoping we’ll hear back on Monday.

I’ve just hit a point now where I’m sick with worry about this and can’t help but fear the worst! The waiting is horrendous!

In the mean time, there’s another lump that has appeared on her ankle.

Ive tried to Google but can’t find anything similar, where there are lumps on both limbs. The lumps are movable and painless and haven’t grown since being found (well, certainly not anything noticeable).

The doctor at the hospital did say to me that they looked at the relationship between the lump and the surrounding tissue and that looked okay. This is the only piece of information he gave me and was only because I asked. I live overseas and don’t speak the local language here so that’s been an obstacle to getting information. Anyway, this sounds hopeful, but I keep reading that biopsy’s are to confirm a diagnosis that is suspected following MRI.

Sorry for the rambling post, I’ve just hit my limit on what I can deal with and don’t know what to do. 😢

My husband has these, @SOTY and they’re quite large. Shins, knees and shoulders.

They’re harmless — on him, anyhow. He had one removed and biopsied and it was nothing. He’s left the rest because he’s a big baby.

I’m hoping the same for your daughter. Try to think good thoughts.❤️

My daughter had a lump in her neck , it was removed and I was told it was nothing to worry about by the doctor after biopsy! I remember well the anxiety waiting for the results, even though she's an adult now. Like a PP said I'm sure if it wasn't good news you would know by now. All the best Flowers

AquaVite · 09/07/2022 23:25

Another one here who has been told that when looking at lumps on shins, moveable = generally good.

Good luck OP. I can feel your anguish from here. Take care, I hope you soon get the news you need Flowers

My dad has had a lump on his shin since he was a little boy. It’s noticeable. I forget what it actually is now, but it’s totally harmless and he’s now 80. I absolutely understand why you’re worried but the likelihood of it being anything sinister is tiny.

It’s so reassuring to hear of others who have had similar and been okay.

I should hear from the GP tomorrow and will update you all.

Have you heard of neurofibromas? They are bumps that can be anywhere I believe. It's not a life limiting condition as far as I'm aware, my child was investigated for this (nf1) as he has several cafe au lait spots.
I hope you get your results very soon and all clear!

XelaM · 10/07/2022 23:03

Wishing you all the best 🙏🏽

Hope all goes well tomorrow

Notodaynotever · 10/07/2022 23:19

Thinking of you op. This is such a scary time.

SOTY · 11/07/2022 09:45

I’ve just had the results and it’s nothing nasty, thank goodness!

The GP said they are granulomas. He explained it as the body over reacting to injury. He wasn’t able to explain why exactly this is happening to her, since she has 3, and said we need to see the specialist again to discuss why she’s got them and if we need to do anything about them. I am so relieved.

Thanks so much for all of the support, it really helped!

Really pleased to see your update - I imagine you had an awful weekend with the waiting.

Hope you don't get any more scares, and that they can answer why your daughter is getting all these lumps!

Hello everyone I am in a similar situation my 11 month old I noticed a bump lump sort of hard feeling in one shin today today it does seem the size is much bigger after about 2 weeks it is painless but it is directly on the front of the shin and it feels sort of hard are your lumps hard or soft thank you so much

BeforeIforget · 13/07/2022 00:32

Hi @Lucasmom529
It’s most likely nothing but the only way to be sure is to make an appointment with the GP.
I think the general advice is, if it’s still there after 2 weeks or changed in some way then get it checked. Don’t be afraid to call the doctor that’s what they’re there for.
In the meantime try not to Google it and worry yourself, ( speaking from experience on many occasions)!!
