What is going on? Crime everywhere..police not interested as not enough staff

Nhs crumbling as not enough staff

Supply chains crumbling not enough staff

Crops rotting not enough staff

tramsport and airline chaos not enough staff

Benefits rising - jobless rising ... all since people got a taste of furlough.

Surely a good chunk of unemployed people can be put to use somehow before they are given access to jobseekers etc

There is of course nothing wrong with fruit picking as a job, but its not really a practical option for many people.
I live in a city, not many fruit picking opportunities, apart from on my allotment.
I’m a single parent, I have house to run, a teen and several pets - I can’t leave them to go off and live in temporary accommodation to go fruit picking.
I’m fortunate, I have a secure civil service job, but in the past, before parenthood and mortgages I have done what was needed, temped, retail, supermarket checkouts, washed up in works canteens. I would do any of those jobs again if I had to because they are a practical option.
I’m sure its the same for many people.

What is wrong with fruit picking as a job? When I was at uni I really wanted a fruit picking job in the summer as I was totally self-financing but there were non available due to some kind of overseas recruitment/landlord/employment agency scam going on. Basically the jobs were ONLY available to eastern Europeans, who were bussed to the farms, accomodation was 'included' so that they were crammed into HMO's, 'rent' deducated from their meagre salary etc. It was a massive scam. I would imagine there are plenty of students happy to do these jobs?

This is exactly how it is in our area. No english can get fruit picking or factory work as both are solely for the migrant agency workers who are indeed housed and bussed by the gangmasters/agency owners.
